Aid Fire Victims
April 1947

WHEN THE INTERIOR of the Sachem Village apartment of Mr. and Mrs. John I. Mac Donald '44 was gutted by fire on the morning of March 6, an instantaneous and spontaneous movement arose on the part of undergraduates, faculty and townspeople to help them replace their house furnishings and clothes, almost all of which were destroyed by the blaze. Mrs. Mac Donald was slightly burned and their baby daughter was unharmed. Mac Donald himself was attending a class.

As soon as the movement started, TheDartmouth offered its services as a central clearing house for any contributions, and in less than a week $1100 was contributed by students, townspeople and faculty. Shortly thereafter the Mac Donalds were as comfortably fixed as they had been prior to the fire due to a remarkable demonstration of community cooperation and goodwill.
