THE QUARTERBACKS

The vital role of quarterback will be entrusted to the capable hands of two sophomores, both of whom are outstanding prospects for future stardom. BobMcCraney comes from Minneapolis. He attended West High School, where a long line of gridsters have found their way to Hanover. The T quarterback requires calm and poise, since he handles the ball on practically every play. McCraney appears to possess these virtues. The quarterback is the principal passer in the T, and Bob can do that. Finally, there is the little matter of calling the plays in logical and bewildering (to the opponents) sequence, a function that McCraney fulfilled ably in spring practice. ,At 200 pounds, he has the power to carry on the rugged style of football demanded by his exacting role. Readers of this column should hear his name often in the next three years. Second of the sophomore quarterbacks and virtually equal in all-around ability is John Clayton, brother of Hal Clayton, an erstwhile football and baseball performer for the Green. John was captain of last year's freshman team, where his leadership was inspiring and his passing deadly. Weighing just under 200 pounds, Clayton may suddenly find himself and flash the ability that made him one of the outstanding schoolboy prospects (he captained the Andover eleven) in New England two years ago. He will alternate with McCraney at the quarter-back post and will unquestionably see a great deal of action. Third of the leading quarterbacks is the stormy petrel of recent years, Conrad Pensavalle, who was a starting quarterback in his freshman year, played at both quarterback and halfback in his sophomore and junior years, and is now one of the veterans of the squad. Capable of sparking the team to great heights, Pensavalle was also capable of occasional spectacular errors of judgment. A deadly passer and a good punter, he may see considerable service this fall, when inspirational efforts are needed.
