Leading social event of the month, at least in the Hub of the Universe, was 1938's annual Beer Picnic, held as usual at Coke Barton's estate in Stoneham. In spite of one of the worst near-cloudbursts in Boston history, fifteen of the faithful, accompanied by fifteen or so equally faithful wives, girl friends, and children gathered to quaff the amber stuff and partake of picnic suppers ranging from Canter's full-course chicken dinner to the less fortunate who eked out their hard-boiled eggs with hot-dogs thoughtfully provided by Mrs. Barton. The roster included: Fran Reilly,Andy Perkins, Bob Bott, Frank Cannell, CokeBarton, Danny Marshall, Royce Randlett,Frank Brett (director of arrangements and beer), Bill Ganter, Charley Hitchcock, BoitWiswall, Wendell Lake, Parker Brownell, Roland Jones, and the secretary.

The October schedule is much heavier, what with the Harvard and Yale games and various other informal reunions. Next month's notes will contain what little news I can glean from people who were there.

From Danny Marshall comes news of PresDowner: "Subsequently Pres moved to California with his family. Now he has forsaken Los Angeles after numerous years when he could have become a 'native son.' He is now employed by Brown Shoe Corp. of St. Louis and they are sending him to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (the school which used to run competitions for Carnival Posters—sec'y) to take some specialized courses in leather tanning."

From Balboa Heights (PO Box 37), Canal Zone, Panama, comes sudden news of StanBrown, late of the FBI. "So down here I came and after ten days of negotiating back and forth was given the position of Chief of the Civil Intelligence Section of the Panama Canal. The job does offer a great many interesting angles and I should be given more or less of a free hand in developing the organization and coordinating it with the Intelligence agencies of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The big personal problem is housing. The greater part of the facilities was constructed apparently before Theodore Roosevelt ever conceived the idea of Panama."

First prize this month for achieving eminence (perhaps we ought to have some tangible reward for each winner) goes to ex Dartmouth editor, Hal Berman. "An expert on Russian Law was last night named by Harvard University to a position on the University's newly created Russian Research Center. In addition, the new appointee will be Visiting Professor of Law at the Harvard Law School and a member of the teaching staff of the International and Regional studies program. Recipient of this joint appointment is Mr. Harold J. Berman, at present Assistant Professor of Law at Stanford University Law School. He will join the Harvard faculty on July 1, 1948." (Rec'd in mid-Sept.)

An announcement of the birth on August 28 of Young Parran Dawkins III says, "The surest way I know of answering the unanswerable question of so many considerate classmates and their wives at our grand 10th this past June."

"Alexander Calder Jr. has been elected a director of Union Bag and Paper Corporation, it was announced at New York. Mr. Calder joined the Union Bag organization in 1940. He has served in the sales department and as assistant to the director of industrial relations. At present he is assistant to Leonard J. Doyle, vice president in charge of sales."
