PATRICK JOSEPH KANEY, Assistant Professor of Physical Education, died unexpectedly at his home in Hanover, September 23, at the age of 65. Known to thousands of alumni for his "rec" classes and for his work with Dartmouth gym teams, which he coached from 1914 to 1940, "Pat" Kaney had been a member of the faculty here since 1914.
Before coming to Dartmouth he had served as assistant physical director at the Lynn, Mass., YMCA from 1910 to 1912 and had held a similar position at the Boston YMCA from 1912 to 1914. During World War I he served as a lieutenant in the Army, and during World War II he took a leading part in the physical training program for Navy V-12 students at Dartmouth.
Aside from his physical education work, "Pat" Kaney's greatest interest was in the Elks, of which he was a widely known leader in the Hanover area. A member of the organization since 1922, he helped found the Hartford, Vt., lodge six years later; was named exalted ruler of that lodge in 1929; and held many other lodge positions. He was made an honorary life member of the Hartford Elks in 1944.
Mr. Kaney was a member of the George Rider Post of the American Legion, Hanover, and during 1945-46 served on the state legion executive committee.
He was born in South Boston, Mass., on March 17, 1883. He was married in 1917 to the former Annie E. Clark of Boston, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Elsie M. Kenney of Hanover, and a brother, Jeremiah Kaney of North Easton, Mass. Funeral services were held in Hanover on September 25.
A tribute to "Pat" Kaney will appear in next month's issue of the MAGAZINE.
