Hal Leich, from the relative temperate clime of Bethesda, Maryland, observes that "not all members of our class are content to sit by the fire when 'the wolf wind is wailing at the doorway' if we can believe the 1948 issue of The American Ski Annual: CharlieProctor is listed as the secretary of the Yosemite Winter Club, and there is a note about Bob Monahan's new job with the Outing Club. Charlie Dudley has an article entitled 'Equipment Notes,' in which he tells how HalHirsch brought a number of editors from such magazines as Esquire, Life, Look to Timberline Lodge last spring in order to indoctrinate them in skiing. As Charlie says: 'We guess Hal Hirsch didn't spend all his time at Dartmouth at books and on horseback.' "
Speaking of Bob Monahan, he is written up in an ambitious project of the Ski Club of Washington, D. C., entitled Skiers' Handbook. An honorary member of the Club, Bob frequently assisted the Club with movie and lecture programs during his stay in Washington with the U. S. Forest Service. An authority on skiing and climbing in the White Mountains, Bob helped found the weather station on the summit of Mt. Washington which he vividly described in his book Mt. Washington Reoccupied.
'AI Fisher, covering the Roslyn (N. Y.) waterfront:
"I see Ray Hedger every week or so commuting into New York. He has recently bought a home in Glen Cove and is busy fixing it over. Loren Heron returned to Roslyn following a period of service in the Navy and has recently bought a home nearby. Not so long ago while stocking up on supplies in the local delicatessen, I bumped into a familiar figure coming through the door. It turned out to be Ev Hannan whom I hadn't seen since leaving college. He also has bought a house here in Roslyn since getting out of the service. Read Arthur spent a delightful weekend with us last winter after attending a convention in New York. He hasn't changed a bit and looks about as young as ever."
Johnny Cornehlsen, associate professor ofpsychology at San Francisco State College, writes:
"It has been a pleasure in coming out to this part of the country for a more or less permanent station to find Dartmouth men so well organized, so active and so friendly. At a family picnic held at a summer place off Skyline Blvd., about 25 miles from the city, I had a particularly enjoyable visit with Dick Robin and his wife."
Another recent Californian is Ben Scales of15159 Haynes St., Van Nuys, who reports currently:
"Still being fed by the tax-payers as Chief of Personnel Relations and Training at the very large and progressive (thank the Lord and General Bradley) Birmingham VA Hospital. The job is educational, interesting and consumes most of my working moments. Whenever possible (seldom) I beg off to attend the fine Dartmouth functions in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Dick Rogers is holding his hair, age and job with Rexall admirably, while Bill Keyes has increased his girth, decreased his thatching and is completely devoted to some electronic gadget about which I hope to know more."
Ed Phelps is in his second year as principal of Windsor (Vt.) High School where he has four Dartmouth men on his faculty. His job keeps him so busy that he rarely gets to Hanover uring the school year, but he does spend the summer going to Boston University doing graduate work which may eventually lead to a doctor's degree.
Bill Alexander, now in his second year with Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, passes along the good word of Ed Merkel and GregWright, the only '29'ers he has met up with in Cincinnati.
Earl Fyler, after two years at South Works, is now back at Gary Works as Supt. of Industrial Relations.
Ralph Butler, asst. manager of sales for Thayer, Inc. of Gardner, Mass., has just moved to 16 Water St., Ashburnham, Mass.
Two recent visitors to Boston were TalBabcock, asst. vice president, the Continental Bank & Trust Company of New York, and Shep Stone, returning from Hanover where he had lectured in the Great Issues course. At lunch with Herm Liss he revealed with pride that he was the daddy of a nine-months-old daughter, his first child. Shep, who is asst. to the editor of The Sunday Times, hopes to go to Europe on an assignment soon. Dr. Bernie Berman married Nelly Cota Guigui of Paris (the Sorbonne 1940) in Waterbury, Conn., on October 12, 1947, "a little late but still a war bride."
