Some nice long and newsy letters have come in this month, but in the interest of the list of loyal contributors printed in this issue, I shall hit the high spots only, and keep some of the meat for later on.
Milt Alpert reports that he is still on the legal staff of the New York State Comptroller, and that Bruce Stephen Alpert was born last August. Milt's activities in Albany sound not unlike my line of work in Washington. Would you move down here with the Governor next January, Milt, if. The American Banker reports that Bill Lieson has been made a vice-president of the Union Trust Cos. of Springfield, Mass Last month I commended and congratulated John Couzens for being elected to the Common Council of Yonkers, N. Y., but obviously he was running for an even more important office at the same time, for The New York Herald Tribune of November 16, 1947? records that he became a husband on the day before, the elector in this case being Miss Mary Jane Wilson, also of Yonkers. Congratulations and very best wishes. ... .A note says that Edward B. Hall has recently become manager of the informational films division of Eastman Kodak Co... JohnClark, as of February 10, will "take over" TheClaremont Daily Eagle. He says:
"So, the banks permitting, we should be able for the next twenty years or so to offer pals at least a welcome and, if we ever stop having children, perhaps a bed within whistling distance of Hanover Plain."
John added other newsy items A clipping reveals that Dick Stoiber planned to attend a meeting of the Geological Society of America in Ottawa at the end of December, along with-other members of the Dartmouth faculty John Swenson was elected vicepresident of the Merrimack (N. H.) County Dartmouth Alumni Association The most interesting political event in the class news is that Sam Allen, according to an AP dispatch, is prominent in the state branch of the Progressive Citizens of America, and is active in the effort to get the name of Henry Wallace on the state ballot The list of George Hahn's affiliations and activities won't fit in this column, but I'll give it to you later; it's sufficient for the moment to say that George and his wife have their own five children and a nephew and niece living with them, and that he is so busy that two of his hobbies are trying to see the family and trying to catch up on sleep Bill Brister made some news by being listed among those who had purchased some kind of commodities, like Mr. Pauley. I hope his investments were half as successful.
Ben Burch, that erstwhile Washingtonian, has leased the Ethan Allen Inn near Manchester, Vt., this winter and is busy providing lodging and meals for skiers attracted to the Big Bromley-Snow Valley ski area. Ben reports that his P.O. address is Arlington, Vt., and that his phone number is Manchester 45-M2 for '32ers and others who want to contact him for something special in the way of ski reservations (adv.). Ben's hostelry is the original homestead of Ethan Allen, of Green Mountain fame.
I really appreciated the messages of sympathy a number of fellows sent on my father's death. My son, who seems to get quoted in here every month, again hit the right thought. He has been annoyed by my many week-ends at the office, or, during my father's illness, in New York. He said to Alice, when I went to the funeral, I guess Daddy won't be away week-ends so much any more, but I'd rather have him away and still have Gramp."
