Having just come back from China within the last six months, Roy Rowan is going back again, but this time in a new capacity. Recently appointed Life Magazine Far Eastern correspondent, Roy will be responsible for the photographs and stories you read from now on concerning China, Java, Dutch East Indies, and the Philippine Islands. He planned to leave about the first of March for his new assignment Roy carries considerable first hand knowledge of Far Eastern conditions, having spent a majority of his army years out there, and then following up for another two years or so as an UNRA
representative in China. Another of those who "labor for Luce" is Bruce Friedlich, whose activities on Fortune help keep that magazine in the top drawer. Bruce and wife Kath took a mid-winter sojourn to Stowe and enjoyed two wonderful weeks of skiing. Even 35° below weather didn't make Bruce hang up his boards. While in the vicinity they spent a weekend in Hanover, and report that it is still the same old wonderful place. However they did report one sad feature—and that, my boys, is the fact that the Inn Coffee Shop no longer serves beer. What do they do after the second show? Must be rough having to get back to the books so soon.
While we seem to be discussing welltraveled individuals from this illustrious class let me tell you about one whose middle name must be Gulliver. He is in radio, and while those boys are always up to something new, Buzz Willis can stop them all cold for at least a while. Buzz, as you all probably know, is on the "Vox Pop" show, which recently made its weekly appearance—Wednesday nights—in an Army bomber flying over the North Pole. From one climatic extreme to another, for a week or so before that they were broadcasting from Florida. And even with -all that traipsing around Buz is home part of every week with his wife "Catchy" and their four youngsters.
This bit of news is purely secondhand, so I hope I'm not jumping the gun, but I have so tew details I guess I'm safe. A business associate of mine from Minneapolis told me that you're engaged, Jim Vaughan. If so, what's her name, Jim? We have to have that you know.
Bill Knight 'OB sent along a photograph and article from a Rockford, Illinois, paper a short time ago all about Frank Munsey. Frank, recently married by the way, is a doctor on the staff of Rockford Memorial Hospital and has been specializing in pediatrics and surgery. Frank is originally from Swampscott, Mass., and after Dartmouth went to Boston University Medical School. Then followed several years in the Army medical service, and now recently he and his wife have moved to Rockford.
Gleaning the New York papers, I occasionally pick up some news that gets by our usually very reliable clipping service. Bless their hearts, though, for I have to depend on them when you guys get into one of your lazy streaks and don't write. Anyway, to get back again, this little article in question mentioned that Pete Glenn and Bill Durkee were both in a wedding on the West Coast, which meant quite a trip for Pete from New York, but since it was his future brother-inlaw's wedding—well, guess that's why.
Dave Bryan, or I should say Dr. Dave Bryan, is practising in Stowe, Vermont. Dave left the service (don't know whether khaki or blue) about the middle of December, and the snow and skiing country looked very good to him—and as he says a pleasant change from California sand. Well, for me right now, some of that California sand would seem pretty nice. So those of you who plan some skiing at Stowe, this year and in the future, remember Dave Bryan is there- and socially speaking he would like to see you—and he is there professionally if you need him.
Chuck D'Olive reports that he has been extremely busy of late, and has seen very few of the class, but does mention having seen Wayland Avery '39, and Fred Lynch and his new wife.
Very little news of weddings and births this month. In fact, we only have one bit of news along that line. A daughter Marjorie Ellen was born January 7, to Dr. and Mrs.Jerry Blumberg.
I hear that Dick Potter has been ill lately, but last reports have him well on the road to recovery. I remember a year or so ago being so amused at Dick's talking about women's pastel-colored hose (being in the hosiery business, he should know). Having seen some now, guess I'll have to believe him. Anything can happen with the new look, it seems.
Now for a few more notes that have arrived. Having remarked that there were no engagement or wedding announcements, here are a few I want to get in before winding up for this month.
Ira Skutch is engaged to Miss Elizabeth Thrower of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a spring wedding is scheduled.
Guy Emerson was married in early January to Miss Mildred Guttormsen. Guy, I understand, is at Thayer School now.
On December 26, Miss Virginia Rutter of Rutherford, N. J., announced her engagement to John Hands. Since his release from the Navy, John has been associated with the Walter Kidde Construction Company in New York.
So that's it for another month. See you in April.
