One of the recent mails brought a bundle of letters which have been acumulating on Fred Pfau's desk for the past few months. Some of it may not be new but working on the basis that any news is good news I'm passing it on to you. Fred, by the way, is teaching school in Hartford, Conn. Besides teaching and shouldering most of the worries for the DNAA, Pfau is wound up in the last stages of writing his thesis for one of these much sought-after degrees of advanced learning. I don't know what else he is doing but you can bet that Pfau ILL is working at more than just two full-time projects.
A note from D. J. Kutchera passes the word that his designation is Lt. (jg) USN and that he is working for the Chief of Naval Operations. In case any of his old cronies are interested, Kutchera's address is 2813 Dumbarton Ave., NW, Washington, D. C. The regular Navy seems to suit him fine. Speaking of regular Navy and related subjects, Pfau sends a note to the effect that Pete Taylor, ex-MAA of various dorms, is a paid-up member in DNAA. Not much news from Pete except that his address is 21 East 79th St., New York 21. Jim Huntington, who once had the distinction of being the first paid-up member in the DNAA, is back on the Hanover Plain, a member of the class of '49 according to Jim Sr.
Another member of our far flung brood who has found the Navy career to his liking is Ens. R. B. Pond USN. Bob is currently serving as a CIC officer on the heavy cruiser, USS Macon, in the Atlantic. At his last writing he was making liberties in numerous ports along the coast with a European cruise planned for this May. While we're on the subject of regular Navy men, yours truly would like to send out a query as to the location of William S. Butler, last seen in the vicinity of the Naval Mine Depot, Yorktown, Va. Reward for reporting his whereabouts: Your name in print.
One of the letters Pfau passed on to me was from my old roomy, Al Zinovenko. It sure seemed good to hear from him again. Timo seems to be pretty well snowed under with his studies and "ologies" at Temple Medical in Phily. Quoth the Ravin Russian, "The second year is rough. The expression is 'if you got by the first year then you're all set'—set for the second year." Timo's address is 3232 N. 16th St., Phila 40 in case any of you are interested. Ed Lanphier writes from the Univ. of Illinois, where he is attending the College of Medicine in Chicago. According to Ed there are at least four Navy alumni in quest of that M.D. at the Univ. of ILL., including Keith McCormick, Lowell Hokin, Richard Kosterlitz and himself.
A letter from Jacob Gleber furnishes morethan his share of news. He writes: "You might be interested in some bits of information on several of the men in our group. Ivey Roy all and I both received Mechanical Engineering from Tufts College last June. Arley McCoy also got his B. S. in Engineering from there. Ivey is now employed by Goodyear in Akron. I'm with Bethlehem Steel Cos. at Sparrows Point, Maryland. My mailing address is 252 Patapsco Ave., Baltimore 22.I was wondering if you could furnish me with John C. Jansing's address." (Ed.: We can't but maybe he can.)
Another engineer reports in from DeltaPhi, R. P. 1., Troy, N. Y. Ray Whiteheadwrites: "I'm studying aeronautical engineering out here and am very much interested in it. I must admit I could probably have a much better time at school such as Dartmouth, but here I can get what I really want even though the atmosphere is poor to say the least. I guess it just proves that you can't have your cake and eat it too."
Jumping from the material to the incorporeal, a short script from Jim Merritt notes that he is in his junior year at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. We always thought that that school was a girls' college. Jim reports that he is engaged to one of the coeds and plans to write for a living. No correlation intended between those two isolated facts in the preceding sentence. We are glad to hear from Am Cartin who contributes the following information concerning his recent activities:
"Since I last saw the green hills of Hanover, I have married Franchion Goldenberg of "Windsor, Conn., and am now working for the above concern (Capitol Light & Supply Co., Hartford) in the capacity of an industrial salesman. The work is very interesting, married life is excellent and, in general, I am progressing very nicely. Saw the Dartmouth-Yale fracas last fall and also Ed Simons and Dave McBean."
Since we've been forced to mention Yale we might add that Joel Fuerst is now studying in that institution of higher learning and has the address of 946 Yale Station, New Haven.
Just one note to offer for the Marines. Fred Kahn wrote us while he was in the states on a vacation to the effect that he was discharged from the Marines in Japan and is now working in that country for the War Department in the field of criminal investigation, which he says keeps him pretty busy.
Picking up the odds and ends, Ivor Jones is still on duty in Guam according to his family. Dan Drummer is working in New York City and is engaged to Miss Betty Lansky of Gotham with the final word planned for sometime this spring. Joe Wosinski sent in his dues with an uninformative note on the letterhead of the J. L. Hudson Co., Detroit 26. Four of our members who are on the Hanover Plain picking up where they left off are Franklyn Stern, John Lane, Foxhall Parker and AI Gustafson of the Marine Corps and D.O.C.
I guess that our slate is now wiped clean of old news. We definitely don't work under the belief that no news is good news so the mailman had better do me justice.
