This is going off belatedly to Hanover because of a trip for Marjie and me to the Bahamas to search for some sunshine after a colder and snowier winter than usual around here. As luck would have it, while walking along a path on Harbour Island, a small spot near north Eleuthera, we ran into Paul and EasyGuibord, so we had a brief reunion of our own. Didn't encounter any other '36ers even though we made stops of a few days each in Coral Gables, Fla., and Wilmington, N.C., enroute home.
Speaking of trips, I have not yet found a good picture of last year's African Safari but still have hopes. I think some of the participants should look great in those broad-brimmed hats! Our class travel director, Bill Wyman tells me that after discussions with a number of people it was decided to skip a trip this year because of the conflict with Reunion, but that planning for something special is under "way for early next year. More details will be forthcoming when available.
From Nichols College in Dudley, Mass., comes news that Robert .Eaton, Dean of Students and Registrar, has been promoted from associate professor of marketing to full professor. Bob and Carol have two children, Carol Ann, a librarian in the Dudley High School, and Steven, a banker in Webster, Mass. My last information doesn't indicate any grandchildren. Bob started at Nichols after graduation then went to work for the American Optical Co. when Nichols closed during the war. Later Nichols reopened as a four-year college and Bob became a part-time teacher for some years. After obtaining his M.A. from Clark University he returned to Nichols full time. They were last at our 25th, so perhaps they will make it again this year.
Speaking of Reunions, I forecast for the benefit of the Reunion Co-Chairmen on February 1 that we would have 374 attendees. This was based on all the answers we had then, the lists"of "hope to," "maybe" and "I talked to J— B— and he plans to come." I also used my own crystal ball which is a class list showing which reunions each member of the Class has attended. As of this date, March 7, I have revised my estimate to 376 since we now have 150 definite on Cliff England's count. This includes more than 60 per cent who have paid all or part of their reunion fees. It really appears that we are going to have a record turnout and if you are on the edge of deciding you should come - then do it now - send in your reservation and join the crowd.
Some of the statistics are interesting. We have 20 classmates who have attended all seven reunions held since we left Hanover and 12 of these have already signed up, as have half of those who have been to six reunions. Of the various groups that I have listed by the number of reunions attended there are more coming back from the men who have been back twice before than from any other. Of course, from the Class as a whole the largest group is something over 200 of those who have never been back and as of now there are three of these who plan to be in Hanover in June and I'm sure there will be many more joining them. We also have ten who have been back once in 40 years so it will be great to renew old friendships and in many cases try to recognize a teammate or fraternity brother from many years ago. In case you are slightly confused by the differences in numbers between this column, Tithe, and the reunion committee mailings, keep in mind you will read this when it's six weeks old, the committee's bulletins are the most current if you allow for the printing delays in Hanover because of the Alumni Fund mailings.
Of those now signed up Dr. Tom Monagan heads the list (as usual) for number of family members coming with a total of five - Tom and Margie along with three of their 12 children. I'm sure they still hold the record for the largest family!
The nominating committee headed by Phil Mclnnis is at work assembling a new slate of officers and executive committee to be nominated at Reunion so if you have any suggestions contact Phil in Hanover. As of now I don't have any information as to when or where we will hold our usual fall reunion since we can not use Stone End this fall, but will let you know when it is arranged. At present the Class schedule is as follows:
Executive committee meeting Saturday, May 1 at 4:30 in office of Phil Mclnnis - 306 McNutt. All classmates welcome. Dinner afterwards for classmates and wives at the D.O.C. house. Contact Mclnnis or Ray Builter for reservations.
Spirit of '36/40 June 14-17 Hanover See you there!
