SPRING FOOTBALL
June 1948 Francis E.Merrill '26

On May 1, Coach Tuss McLaughry and his assistants conducted a game scrimmage as the concluding event of six strenuous weeks of spring practice. During the course of the afternoon, which saw the air full of footballs, the Green (first) team scored a number of touchdowns against the White (second) team, thereby reversing the experience of the previous Saturday when the second team spent the afternoon pushing the first all over the field. This suggests that the rivalry for positions next fall will be intense, with few men sure of starting berths.

The two teams initially lined up approximately as follows: Green—l.e., Captain Dale Armstrong: 1.t., Jon Jenkins; 1.g., Ray Truncellito; c., George Schreck; r.g., Stew Young; r.t., Red Gowen; r.e., Red Rowe; q.b., Bob McCraney; 1.h.b., Joe Sullivan; r.h.b., Hal Fitkin; f.b., Herb Carey. This is an all-veteran team, with the exception of freshman Bob McCraney at quarterback. The White team was studded with freshmen, with the entire starting backfield lifted bodily from the 1951 aggregation. This team lined up as follows: 1.e., Sarno; 1.t., Eberle; 1.g., Melville; c., Brown; r.g., Fox; r.t.. Carpenter; r.e., Beeman; q.b., Clayton; 1.h.b., Tyler; r.h.b., Isbey; f.b., Roberts.

The team is heavily loaded with fast, rugged backs, and the two backfields noted above are capable of carrying on in the best of company. Joe Sullivan has been shifted from quarterback to halfback, where he currently cavorts like a colt. The two freshmen quarterbacks, McCraney and Clayton, are both experienced operatives from the T. Both tipping the scales at around 200, they should play a lot of football during the next three years. The team is well fortified at the ends, with at least four top flight operatives. The guards are adequately supported, but center is strictly one deep. That one is George Schreck, who played practically 60-minute football last fall. The team is weakest at the tackles, where Jenkins is the only candidate with both the size (225 pounds) and the experience (this will be his third season as a regular) for the kind of football presently played in the Ivy League. This, then, is the situation in brief at the close of business this spring. What may happen this fall is still anybody's guess.

DOUBLE WINNER: At Wet Down ceremonies on May 13, Bobby Merriam '48, lacrosse captain, received "The Dartmouth" Cup as "the athlete who by his conduct both on the field and off has reflected the most credit on the College," and also the Mulhern Trophy given annually to the most improved hockey player.
