You will recall that we lost Evan Woodward during the war. A captain in the array, he died while a student at the Air Forces Intelligence School in Harrisburg in 1942. It is fitting and gratifying that Woody's son, Daniel E. Woodward, has been awarded one of the first Hopkins scholarships for sons of Dartmouth men who died in service in World War II. Hardy & Son, pulp and paper mill architects and consulting engineers, has discontinued business. John A. Hardy, who succeeded his father as head of the company, has been prevailed upon by his physician, aided and abetted by his family, to terminate the business in the interest of his health. Alarmed at the implications of the announcement, I called Jack during a recent trip to New York and was reassured by his explanation that his retirement is not complete as he has retained his connections in two other companies. It is just a tapering off.
