College to Publish New Song Book
November 1949

ANEW EDITION of the Dartmouth SongBook is being published by the College under the editorship of Prof. Paul R. Zeller, director of the Dartmouth Glee Club. Scheduled to be out by Christmas, the book will contain 22 of the old favorites and one song,

"Take Me Down to the Sea," which has not hitherto appeared in a Dartmouth collection. This latter song was written on the campus in 1942 by one of the members of the Navy Indoctrination School at Dartmouth and now has a firm position among the College's songs. The new edition will also contain a brief account of the origin and history of each of the songs included in the collection.

The first published collection of Dartmouth songs was put out in 1898 by Edwin O. Grover '94. Thereafter Mr. Grover and Prof. Harry R. Wellman '07 associated themselves in bringing out three other editions in 1909, 1914, and 1923. Having been the recipient of a generous assignment of all copyright and publisher's rights held by Mr. Grover and Mr. Wellman, the College itself put out an edition of Dartmouth songs in 1936. The last of the copies constituting the 1936 edition was sold out a couple of years ago. Judging from the number of orders which have had to go unfilled since then, the new edition will be warmly welcomed.

Approximately 9 inches by 11 inches in size and containing about 96 pages, the new edition will have a dark green cloth binding so arranged as to cause the book to stand open readily on a piano music rack. The price will be $2.50.
