Writing these notes for the February issue, it is a pleasure to comply with the request of the Editor that alumni secretaries condense their stuff in view of the need for space for Alumni Fund reports. What is missing here you will read in the Newsletter before you receive this.
Coming down to the Navy Department this Sunday morning, day after New Year's, my eye catches the story of the "Multimillion Dollar Splash," reported in the Times-Herald, by American University, the big Methodist institution in Washington. The story says:
"Courses now offered in business administration will be lumped together to form an undergraduate school of business administration. Lieut. General Willard S. Paul, whose retirement as Army chief of personnel becomes effective today, is expected to be appointed director of the new school."
Our own comment is that in addition to getting a good administrator, American U. couldn't have picked a guy with less hair unless they got Carl Eskeline.
The Secretary has at this writing just returned from his annual trip to somewhere, taken annually when life gets too rough. This time it was to Mt. Dora, Fla., just five miles from Tangerine, where dwells our exuberant classmate, Dr. (or Colonel) Phillips N. Davis, with his delightful helpmeet Verda, in an ambient of sunshine, orange groves, friendly neighbors, and newspaper reports of snowstorms in the North and earthquakes in California. Phil and Verda are grand company, and the eminent doctor, now retired after being beat up in both world wars, was full of Dartmouth reminiscences, although he transferred to Vermont for his medical work. Life in old Sanbom dormitory would do that for you, and Phil has forgotten nothing. Note his smiling photo.
Dick Parkhurst writes me, as a result of an autumn trip to Vermont, that he discovered, at a meeting of the Vermont Dartmouth Association, that the President was none other than our own Honey Abraham. He reported seeing Mason Huse at the meeting also.
By the time you read this, it is hoped that the balmy climate of Hanover will have improved to the extent of furnishing snow for Winter Carnival. The Christmas card I got from the Hanover Inn shows the entrance to the Inn almost blocked by snow, and you can almost hear "the crunch of feet on snow."
Arthur G. (Easty) Eastman has finished his first year of enjoyment of his retirement from the job of vice president of S. H. Kress & Co. He and Mrs. Easty are living at their summer home, Windswept Farm, Whitingham, Vt. He describes it as a welcome change after 20 years in New York City. After all, there is nothing more beautiful than the sunshine on deep snow, and nothing more exciting than the invigorating "hill winds" that Hovey described. (How about that, Phil?)
Remember Sanger Richardson, who spent freshman year with us, from Danvers, and side-kick of "Desperate" Desmond? I had a note from him, in California, where he was visiting his mother. Sanger says his health is not too good, but without details I sincerely hope that this is a temporary condition. I remember Sanger as a guy with a very good sense of humor.
Shorty Hitchcock has a new address for his Loyalty Group Insurance, 1508 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif. I thought only movie stars hung out on Wilshire. In case you look for Shorty to augment your coverage, there is free parking at 1305 Wilshire.
Some time ago Nan Garcia, daughter of Tony Garcia, was written up by the Washington Times-Herald. She is in radio work in Washington, is a singer and is considering going to Rio de Janeiro to sing. Says the Times-Herald: "She is pretty."
In closing these abbreviated notes, I remind you again that the 35th Reunion of 1916 will not, repeat not, be five years from the last one, that is, in 1951. Because of the new system of re-unions, the Terrific Thirty-Fifth will be in 1950, just a year and a half away. Now is the time to decide which daughter's graduation you will pass up, which creditors you will disregard, which fishing trips you will forego, and what you will nee3 for money. Don't miss this reunion, because it might be my last one, and I want to see you, and plan on staying on for the post-reunion vacation. You can't find a better place or a more congenial group to spend it with. Happy St. Valentine's Day!
