Bridgeport Fabrics, Inc., Bridgeport 1, Conn. Here we are with the Holidays a fading memory and only the bills left to pay. But we'll be staring at these for several months so let's get on with something pleasant. Our biography this month features one Ray Morgan, who has come in for casual mention in this column during the past three years. Seems that Compton Advertising (note personal connection at top of this column) decided to get into Television this fall on behalf of Procter & Gamble. A show was developed called "I'd Like To See" and an announcer of good voice and good looks was needed. After much interviewing the man who best filled the bill turned out to be Ray and he is visible to those in the East who have the proper equipment Tuesday evenings at 9:00. Ray is already an old hand at the new medium and from here on we cull from a news column called "Mike Talk." Morgan was born in Dover, N. H., but at the age of four was taken to Washington, D. C., by his parents when his father, a Congregational minister, received a church call there. Ray attended Dartmouth for two years, but quit to become an actor in the railroad exhibit at the Chicago Century of Progress exposition. After a series of odd jobs and a return to collegethis time to the University of New Hampshire —for a degree, he launched his radio career at a 100-watt station in Salem, Mass., where he "did everything."
He moved on to Boston's WCOP as a newswriter and newscaster and then to WINX in Washington. On Pearl Harbor day he became the first announcer for an independent station ever to get a broadcast out of the White House. Even at this early date Ray is a veteran in handling television commercials. His (and I quote) "rugged good looks and lithe figure blend decoratively with the video backdrop." He broke into TV in 1944 as emcee of an early variety show called "Back Stage" which ran 18 weeks. A seasoned hand at standard newscasting he fills in easily on the television for such things as sidelight descriptions at the Columbia University football games and hockey and basketball contests at Madison Square Garden.
Ray had planned on a religious career before entering radio but had to drop it for lack of funds. However, while working as a radio announcer, he studied part-time at Union Theological Seminary in New York and received a license to perform many church functions. His only church was the New Hyde Park Congregational Church on Long Island where he was minister from 1943 to 1946. He took over when there were only 30 members, a debt and a poorly housed church. When he returned it to a wartime chaplain who had previously been pastor, there were 130 communicants, a clean financial slate, and a new house of worship. (Sounds as though Ray really puts it over whether it be Ivory Soap or the ten commandments.)
In addition to "I'd Like To See," Ray also announces Columbia Television's "Toast of the Town" which is produced and emceed by Ed Sullivan, and several radio programs including "Wendy Warren and the News." He is married to the former Ruie Rideout, a former radio actress, and they have a daughter, Ruie Diane, five years old.
Frank Hermes, director of media for Federal Advertising in New York, was elected a Vicepresident last December. The only time I ever run into Frank is at Joe and Rose's eatery on Third Avenue under the EI. Good steaks, good drinks, good fun.
Bob and Lois McLellan gave up apartment living and bought themselves a house this fall in Needham, Mass. The address is 6 Oakhurst Circle. Mac, of course, spends all his nights and weekends remodeling, etc.
Frannie and Bobbie Chase, of West Newton, Mass., dug out the old layette for number four, born last December 31, a girl, but I don't know the name. That makes one male and three females.
Should mention that I heard from CharlieSewall who does his living up in Westwood, Mass. A four-page letter but no news of Charlie. He spent the whole letter describing the plight of some Yale friend who had taken over Alumni Fund activities and who wanted to know how Dartmouth did it. Whatever we tell him won't work because you have to start with a Dartmouth man.
A note from the wandering George Colton: "Coming East on the train from Chicago I discovered Bud Fraser getting on in Rochester, so the two of us had a small reunion together. Bud is still with the Treasury Department working on the sale of Savings Bonds. He was headed for New York and his immediate concern seemed to be a dinner party."
A squib stolen bodily from Dartmouth inChicago edited by Dick Montgomery: "DaveGallagher with wife Julie and their two children, left recently for Albuquerque, N. M., where Dave is opening his own law office." (Local Indians and pottery dealers please note.)
In closing, many thanks to the many of you who sent Christmas cards including FrankSpecht with greetings from Panama, where he spent the holidays recovering from the election, and the Hanover Inn, which wants me to visit the scenes of my childhood. Instead, I shall finish my beer, put out the light, and wish you all goodnight until next month.
