In our search for oldtime snapshots and nictures, we appealed to Earle Pierce, who pens, "After receiving your letter and plea for the right kind of pictures, I dug out my Mem' book over 40 Years old and Gosh All Hemlock, what a bunch of pictures! I'll be damned but I must have been a good PianoMover as a photographer. All of the pictures are either faded out or so dark you could not use them"
We want to extend that plea to the entire Class in hopes that we can obtain a few for publication purposes some ripe, old numbers in true character would be very acceptable.
Here in Florida this winter we have had an opportunity to renew our friendship with Harold Winchester who is a general practitioner of very high standing in Dunedin which is so adjoined to Clearwater that you cannot tell when leaving one and entering the other .... you will recall that "Winch" attended Harvard Medical School with TomFoster and Hal Hyde, rooming with the latter after graduatipn he practiced in his old hometown of Bismarck, N. D., coming to Florida 25 years ago to make this his permanent home .... while losing his physical contacts with Dartmouth, he maintained a real interest in his College with the result that their son Walter is a Dartmouth graduate, and after his medical course at Columbia, came back to Dunedin to enter practice with his father .... making one of those delightful combinations which every father longs for but obtains rarely.
In our book Harold Winchester is one of the real successes of our Class .... sticking to general practice, he has served all branches of mankind, faithfully and well, standing in high esteem in his community .... member of various organizations including Rotary (Walter is also a Rotarian), he is civic-minded fine home and family, respected in his profession and city, Winch has done a splendid job in life.
We heard recently that Jack Ryan is doing fine work in Milwaukee where he is the older man to whom the younger crowd turn for guidance in Dartmouth affairs Jack has the capacity to get along exceedingly well with young lads.
Cliff Rice, semi-retired, lives at 188 S. Canyon View Drive, Los Angeles, Calif., with Box 523, Chicago, as his business address Pipestone Ben always writes an interesting and newsy epistle, knows Florida rather well, says Easty is in the state now, seeking with a group of well-known ornithologists a rare, ivory-bill woodpecker in the Everglades Jack Warnock's home is at 1701 East Bth, Okmulgee, Okla The sympathy of the Class goes to Ed Kenway whose wife died last October according to information which we have just received.
THE LOST IS FOUND—A nice letter just received from Burt Miller reviews his life of recent years .... 3 years with Ordnance ... . badly hurt in Jan. '46 .... in 12 Vet hospitals 5 tough operations, 2 of which were nec- essary to save his life .... partially disabled and compelled, in all probability, to carry cane for life.... married his second wife during the last holiday period .... Miss Lillie Hartwell, daughter of Confederate Captain, is well known in Baton Rouge, La. as a social and civic leader .... she and Burt will open a small gift shop there to be known as "Lillie's Latch String".... it is fine to know where Burt is and the Class wishes him every bit of happiness in the world.
This is our last letter from Florida as we leave here April 1, reach Canaan April 14 .... quite a place here .... run across lots of Dartmouth men of all vintages, more older than 1910 than younger .... easy climate to spend a winter in ... . but life can be aimless if you allow it to be .... personally, Marion and I have liked it, felt very well physically and mentally, seen a lot, visited a 10t... . Dr. "Bush" Kingsford and Prof. Charlie Proctor and their fine wives, as old-timers in this area, have been very helpful in orienting us to the West Coast, the observation of wild life and particularly, eagles, and the learning of color photography on 35mm. slides .... at St. Petersburg Dinner we saw of our own College period, Allen Brown and Wendell Churchill '07 .... Walter Harriman '08 ... . Inge Fearing '09 .... no other Tenner Don Cheney, Les Hawkridge and Floyd Tindall '11 Don did a grand job pinchhitting for Prof. Herb Hill who was delayed somewhere, and we who knew the soft-spoken, gentlemanly lad from Orlando when he was in College were very proud of the friendship.
In mid-March we had an Airmail from Walter Norton saying, "Isabel and I will arrive in Clearwater, Sunday, Mar. 20 and if sou do not get satisfactory accommodations for us in a good hotel with hot water and Southern exposure, we are going to move in on the Hinmans."
I wired him collect, "Cot in our front parlor rented.... twins in bedroom sold out for season .... no Red Sox rooter is moving in on Hinmans. Period. As your agent am negotiating for highest priced accommodations on West Coast. Period. You can't take it with you."
Well, they've been here 5 days.... we've seen about 20 ball games .... were ringside fans at the famous Word-Battle between Red Sox Joe McCarthy and Phillies Bob Carpenter (vulgar scene in front of fans) with more or less justification in the fans booing The Great Manager P.S. We're for "Red" Rolfe and any team he manages, like Ernest Martin Hopkins and some 20,000 other Dartmouth fans including Isabel and Nancy Norton.
Yesterday we accompanied Bill Cunningham to Lakeland where we witnessed the Tigers, paste the Yankees 5-0 Walter and I trying to convince the w.k. radio commentator and newspaper columnist during our 60 mile jaunt cross country that 1910 was Dartmouth's Greatest Class .... wherever you go, everyone knows Bill (even Casey Stengel who gave us pre-game entertainment in the Tigers' ball park under skillful Cunningham leadership) .... for those of us who do not get good radio reception on Bill's broadcasts, it has been an amazing surprise to learn the high reception he has around the country .... you're always hearing someone down here say, "Bill Cunningham at 2:30 Sunday afternoon is the best broadcast in the business!" .... which is sweet music to our ears.
It is a crazy life here .... but lots of fun if you like what I like .... if not, you can always go to St. Pete, the town where Mr. Cunningham got ostracized for labelling it, more or less aptly, as "The City of the Living Dead" .... so what the heck, I guess that we can stand that Norton guy for 7 more days and 20 more ball games until April 1 when we start north for God's Country up in N. H. (Addendum:—we've made reservations for next yr.)
