Having trounced Harvard in its first outdoor dual meet, the Dartmouth track team set its sights on upsetting a powerful Pennsylvania squad. But although the Big Green runners and field men put up a valiant fight, Penn nosed out the Indians, 74 1/3 to 65%, on Memorial Field. The meet was one of the closest seen here in years, with the result hanging on the final mile relay. Penn managed to win this last event by two yards and thus sealed the triumph.
Coach Ellie Noyes' men outdid themselves in several events to make the meet as close as it was. Captain Jim Burnham set a new meet record of 167 feet 6½ inches in the hammer throw; David McDonough and Tom (Red) Rowe finished one-two in the discus; Bill Spoor, Ed Hale and Bob Tyler swept the broad jump; Rowe, George Bikle and John Schalles swept the javelin; Dave Krivitsky won the 44.0 and Spoor captured the 120 high hurdles. Rowe's performance in the javelin was a remarkable one. The star football end threw the spear 174 feet 9½ inches, bettering by many feet any previous toss he had ever made.
Penn's superiority in most of the running events, however, managed to overcome Dartmouth's margin in the field competition. Tom Kirwan o£ Penn set a new meet record by winning the mile in 4:20.5 and Dick Hart of the invading team ran the two mile in 9:43.2, another meet record. A third meet mark was set by Penn pole-vaulter Andy Kirk, who soared 12 feet 934 inches.
Dartmouth loses Captain Burnham, star two-miler Stan Waterman, and distance men Sam Daniell and Norm Crisp by graduation. Daniell and Crisp were awarded the Paul S. Harmon Trophy given annually to the member or members of the senior class who show the most
improvement in cross-country or distance running during their college days.
The new track captain is Tom Richmond, of Kenil worth, Ill., who succeeds Burnham. Like his predecessor, Richmond is a hammer thrower and a good one. He should make a capable leader for what promises to be a strong Indian track team next season.
LEADS VARSITY NINE: Rog Frechette, who has been elected captain of the 1950 baseball team.
