It doesn't seem possible that the summer is over and that with the arrival of September it is time to start grinding out this monthly column. So here goes again with the warning that a year from next June we are going to say, "This is where we came in."

A clipping from the Southbridge, Mass., News last June informs us that on a nationwide program of the Camel Caravan, Vaughn Monroe and his chorus sang a song composed by David H. Merriam. Dave wrote the song for Phi Sigma Kappa during his undergraduate days. Until 1937 Dave was a trust officer at the Southbridge National Bank, having received his law degree cum laude from Suffolk University Law School in 1933. He has recently started a private practice of law in Southbridge.

Warren "Bunny" Smith according to the New York Daily News-Record has recently been named Eastern Branch Manager of Kendall Mills with headquarters in New York. In this new capacity he will be responsible for sales operations on the Atlantic Seaboard of finished textiles and specialty products.

Ed Baker of Westfield, N. J., has been prominently mentioned as chairman of the Union County Republican Committee. Eddie has been active in Republican state and county organizations in addition to his law practice in the firm of Pettit and Baker. He is married and has two children, Cynthia, age ten, and Bruce, age eight.

Curt Wright and his family have moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he and his wife Eleanore are doing graduate work in their respective professional fields. Curt, who has been practicing law for the past four years in Urbana, Ill., has received a fellowship from the Graduate School of the University of Michigan for work in law. His wife, Dr. Eleanore Wright, a physician, will undertake graduate studies in medicine. Their plans at the conclusion of the advanced studies are indefinite. With them, of course, are their two children: Wickie, a daughter eight years old, and Curtis, their eight-months-old son.

From the Maiden (Mass.) Press: "Dr. Richard J. Lougee, Maiden native and graduate of Dartmouth College, University of Michigan and Columbia University, was promoted to full professor of physiography at Clark University this week. A member of the Clark faculty since 1947, he is a recognized authority on New England glaciers and glacial problems."

A notice states that Mr. and Mrs. BradfordStone of Havana, Cuba, were at the Hanover Inn from August 13 to August 18. We are awfully sorry they left the Inn quite so soon because your scribe and his bride arrived at the Inn on the 21st and spent four delightful days in Hanover which would have been even more delightful if the Stones had been there at that time. We had a most enjoyable evening with Mike and Gertrude Choukas. The professor and his family spent the early part of the summer in Baltimore where Mike conducted a special course at Johns Hopkins. They had quite recently returned from a visit to the Fowlers at Little Boars Head, N. H.

We also understand that before returning to Cuba the Stones visited, with Charlie andBarbara Bartlett at their summer home in Plymouth.

Marshall Uovegrove dropped in at the office one day during August. Marshall is working for the Bartlett-Brainard Cos. in Hartford where he is manager of the Higgins Floor Division.

We had a nice note from Dr. Lowell Wormley of Phoenix, Ariz., informing us that he will be in Boston the weekend of October 27 to see the Harvard game and be admitted to the American College of Surgeons. We are looking forward to seeing him at that time.

The directors of Harry W. Smith Incorporated, technical publicity organization at 507 Fifth Ave., New York, announce the election of Carlton C. Porter, formerly news editor and senior account executive, as executive vice-president. In his new capacity Porter will help administer client service and program development—across the board. Heretofore, he has confined his efforts to directing the news programs for Rohm and Haas Cos., its Resinous Products Division, Synthane Corp., The Riverside Metal Cos., and American Zinc Institute. He also handles liaison with advertising agencies, through which over half of the Smith business is billed.

Jack Thees, the big ad man of the New York Herald Tribune, was one of the brass at the big retail dry goods association golf tournament last June, having a gross of 107 with a net of 85, which shows Jack is a good and conscientious business man and hardly even a weekend golfer.

Roger Salinger as of August 1 resigned as president of Massachusetts Gear and Tool Company, although he will continue to serve that company as a director. On September 1, Roger joined the organization of Engineer Sales Company and F. S. Gibbs, Inc., of 43 Leon St., Boston. During his executive responsibility with the Massachusetts Gear and Tool Company Roger was very active in association work connected with the gear industry. He has served as an executive committee member and officer of both the American Gear Manufacturers' Association and the Boston branch of the National Metal Trades Association. Roger and his family recently returned from a month's trip through the Great Lakes area, during which they visited with the John Sheldons, the Don McCalls and the Coggy Broers.

Spring and summer visitors at the Inn included Joshua "Two-Hair" Davis of New Jersey; Chuck Burwell from Portland, Maine; John Shaw from Garden City; Gus Cummings from Pittsburgh; Cliff Randall from Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Osborn from St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Moss from Lockport, N. Y.; Mr. and Mrs .Spencer Cook and daughter from Rochester; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Smith from Beverly; Mr. and Mrs. Donald O'Hara and family of Ridgewood, N. J., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Koerner of Rochester.

A recent gift to the College Library was from Vic Reynolds, and the gift included current publications of the Cornell University Press. Vic is now associated with the Press and has promised to send all future publications of the Press to the Library.

Frank Marsh is still living in Hartford, Conn., with his wife Esther. Frank has been with the Phoenix Insurance Cos. since 1927 and in 1949 was appointed Marine Secretary, which is a very important job in that fine company.

Charles Fleischer has recently moved to Chappaqua, N. Y. Charlie has worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Cos. since 1930. He is married and has three sons: Charles, age 16; Francis, age 14; and John Stephen, age 12.

Art Lyman, general insurance tycoon of Detroit, has recently moved to a new home on West Thirteen Mile Road, Birmingham, Mich. This we happen to know is lovely country, having visited out there a couple of years ago. Art and his wife have two daughters: Margaret Ann, age 22; and Esther Jane, age 19.

Ted Selig has recently moved to 109 West 38th St., Wilmington, Del. Ted is manager of the production engineering department, heating division of the Richmond Radiator Cos. He has one daughter and two sons.

Bunny Barde has recently moved to 770 Malone Road, San Jose, Calif. It has been some years since we have heard from Bunny to know what he is doing and hope that if anyone has contacted him recently he will let us have whatever information he can about Bunny.

You will be overjoyed to know that under the able leadership of Coggy Broer and his many fine assistants, 1927 won the Green Derby in the Alumni Fund for the second time in our history, and the first time in some years. Our winning was by no slight margin, having succeeded in getting 92% of contributors and 131% of our objective for a total of $14,649.56. We are mighty damn proud of this record and know that you all share that pride with us and join us in sending our most sincere thanks to Coggy Broer for the outstanding job he has done.

This record omens well for our fast approaching twenty-fifth reunion and the twenty-five year gift on which we have a terrific job to do. Gus Cummings is head of this gift fund committee and you will be hearing from him shortly about it.

Hope to see many of you at some football games this fall.

Secretary, 501 Boylston St., Boston 17, Mass.

Treasurer and Memorial Fund Chairman Box 1927, Pittsburgh 30, Pa.
