Evidence of a lively interest to "get going" with the 1950-51 Dartmouth activities is typified by the urgent long-distance phone call from our Secretary (on vacation in Maine) to this ghost writer. The urge is general, and stems in part from our last activity of the spring.
In May, following the echoes of our highly enjoyable Glee Club Concert in March, we held the first outdoor "FUN-RAISING" at Paul "Sandy" Sanderson's summer estate. One hundred and eighty-two Dartmouth men and women planned to be present on the appointed day which turned out to be the rainiest of the spring. Postponement to the following day was hopefully made but the rain makers gave us an even worse stage-setting. In spite of it, 135 arrived and enthusiastically proceeded to equalize the external water pressure by consuming all solid and liquid refreshment planned for the previous day. While Dartmouth in Springfield ate, drank, sang and competed for prizes, local radio station announcers applauded and, reportedly, the local Brown alumni met indoors, 23 strong, to pray for our health. It was a good ending to a good year and a good start for this year.
Plans for our fall meeting on October 27 at the Kimball Hotel are under way. Harvey Hood '18, Trustee of the College, will bring us the Dartmouth story in his own way, which, for those men who have heard him, is a most enjoyable way.
The Club is undertaking to publish a directory this year of "Dartmouth-aroundSpringfield" . . . one of these home library items we've all wanted on occasion. Paper makers, printers and committee members willing, it will be distributed before the fall meeting.
This summer, the Springfield Club lost a mainstay and Dartmouth men in general lost a great friend with the death of Russell D.Chase '15. For many years Russ had sparked activities within the Club and last spring arranged and headed our Glee Club Concert. Our program will continue but we will greatly miss him.
