Prof. Gerould, wrote me from Hanover last Sept. 9, enclosing the following obituary notice in the N. Y Herald-Tribune of Friday, Sept. 8: "Mrs. P. S. Boynton Sr., 74; Republican Club Leader. Mrs. Esther McCombs Boynton, 74, wife of Dr. Perry S. Boynton Sr. of the Aphthorp Apartments, Broadway and 79th Street, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Boynton recently observed their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Boynton was one of the founders of the Women's Republican Club of N. Y. and was a member of the executive board of the Republican Committee of One Hundred. She was a member of the Methodist Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, West End Avenue and 86th Street, and of the Society of Descendants of Holland Dames. Her husband; two sons, Dr. Perry S. Boynton Jr. and Carroll Aylsworth Boynton; a daughter Mrs. Maynard C. Wheeler, and 8 grandchildren survive. Funeral service will be at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Newton, Conn." Perry writes that it was a relatively short illness complicated finally by double pneumonia. Coming so soon after the 12th reunion of '9O it will be a shock to all those attending.
Sept. 14 Clif Humphreys wrote announcing the death of Mrs. Humphreys with the following obituary notice: "Mrs. Grace Collis Humphreys, wife of C. S. Humphreys of Madison, Me., passed away at her home on Main Street Sunday afternoon Sept. 3 following a few weeks' illness. Mrs. Humphreys was born in Boston, April 10, '71 the daughter of Marcus and Josephine Griswold Collis. When she was a small child the family moved to Portsmouth, N. H., where she was graduated from the high school in that city. She married Clifton S. Humphreys April 30, '94, coming to Madison as a bride, where she has since resided. , She was a charter member of Margaret Goff Moore Chapter, D. A. R., a member of Minerva Chapter OES and the Sorosis and has been active in social activities of the town. She is survived by her husband, 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5 at the Congregational Church with Rev. Robert Haldane officiating. Wednesday morning the body was taken to Portsmouth for burial in the family lot."
Mr. and Mrs. Humphreys motored up to Hanover from New Jersey where they had been visiting their daughter in Newark, to attend the reunion of '90. We were all glad that she was able to be present after an extended illness. Our sympathy goes out to Clif Humphreys and members of their family. The secretary regrets that up to now he has not been able to visit Clif at Madison, an invitation cordially extended when he became secretary.
