James E. Van Amburg has been named director of the Laboratory Schools at the University of Chicago. As director, Van Amburg will assume administrative responsibilities for the nursery, lower, middle, and high schools which comprise the Laboratory Schools. The Laboratory Schools, started by John Dewey in 1894, now serve more than 1,500 students.
Jim was superintendent of the Carlisle (Massachusetts) Public Schools from 1975-79. During that period he was associated with the Concord (Massachusetts) Area Special Education Collaborative, first as director and then as chairman of the board of directors. At the Laboratory Schools, Van Amburg will succeed R. Bruce McPherson, who will join the education faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle.
Jim began his educational career in 1968 as an English teacher at Trinity School in New York City. He served as principal of Trinity's Junior School from 1970-73.
Stan Brown is the new chief of special collections and curator of rare books at Baker Library. He joined the Baker Staff in 1970 as assistant to the librarian and became chief of public services in 1975.

This column is my last after five years as your class secretary and several more previously as your newsletter editor. Why did I do it?
I don't know.
Something told me that I wanted to . . . that I care about the College and wanted to be doing something. It's been a pleasure.
That's all . . . for now.
