If this issue of the MAGAZINE is late, it is only because the estimable editor suffered a slight trauma early last month when these notes, for the first time since the Norman Conquest, came in ahead of the deadline. I can't explain it, except to say that I've just finished a vacation and I'm obviously not myself. Who I am is another point and I'm not telling.

On said vacation, during which I braved the rigors of Detroit's traffic, I was happy to be able to arrange a meeting with Alex andBetty Fanelli, students and real estate proprietors in and around the University of Michigan, and Bill Mitchel, a stand-in for Jerry Lester and a community relater with the Ford Motor company, an outfit which makes automobiles, I believe.

All were in fine fettle, despite the fact that no amount of arguing could convince Alex that he hadn't just flunked one of his preliminary examinations for his Ph.D. A few tests concerning the viscosities of various alcohols soon made him bounce back, though. From the trio, I heard various reports of the gay miasma which descended over the BobDewey household in Birmingham, Mich;, shortly after the Dartmouth-Michigan: game. People came from as far away as Chicago (cf., the Bud McKinlays and the Dick Higginses), albeit by a somewhat circuitous route. There was some mention of Wild Bill Donovan and Stymie Reynolds, other native Detroiters, but my usual reportorial acuity has made me forget what sort of mention.

On my way back the long route to Claremont, I had a three-hour stopover in New Yorki This was fortunate, because it enabled me to get a line on the living conditions of free lance writers. Believe me, it's good. Just drop around and see Jerry and Peg Tallmer, if you don't think so. The nominal head of the household is engaged in that back-breaking toil, having closed, his desk at The Nation. The actual head of the household is hard at work modeling, finishing up at Barnard and learning to drive their car, which has all sorts of alarming anti-burglary booby-traps.

Earlier I did some scouting around the learned precincts of Cambridge, I found Joeand Anne Palamountain in the best of health and the soundest of economic condition. The latter is partly due to the fact that Harvard has seen fit to appoint Joe a senior assistant tutor at Adams House, one of the college's Spartan dormitories (swimming pool, squash courts, music room, library, lounges, etc.). This in turn means that the college gives them a handsome apartment in the dormitory rent free and that they have to reciprocate occasionally by serving undergraduates tea or port or hot chocolate. The Dartmouth faculty should have it so good!

It was on this same reconnaissance that I was lucky enough to get in a couple of visits to Dick and Barbara Lee and their two fine kids. As an added fillip to two good evenings were Jim and Fran Idema, relatively fresh from a long-distance driving record. (They cruised non-stop to Boston from Grand Rapids, Mich., total elapsed time, 24 hours). Jim, a pillar of the press, is assistant city editor of a Grand Rapids paper (what the hell's wrong with you, Farley, you slug—no titles, no desk, no nothing). They reported their children healthy and active, particularly the latter.

And that takes care of my personal reporting, which, for one so static, is a pretty good haul.

Well, there's one more thing. At one of the first two Dartmouth home games (Holy Cross or Lehigh), I saw Wally Farr, at considerably beyond shouting distance. I have, however, discovered by means too secret to describe that he is hard at work at his native Bradford, Vt., aiding in the operation of a wood veneer mill his family owns.

For what it's worth—and with no intention of stealing Red Merrill's stuff—both the Holy Cross and Lehigh affairs were, to this observer, fine, exciting games. I enjoyed every minute of both. In case you're wondering why Lehigh won, it's quite simple: They played better football and richly deserved to win. If the DCAC keeps staging shows like these two, they'll never get me to stop wandering up to Hanover on fall Saturdays.

My treatment of the mail this montii will be even more fragmentary than usual. The reason for this—or the best one I can dredge up right now—is that they've moved me around in the office here two or three times in the last month and it hasn't done my packrat filing system any noticeable good.

I've found one letter, though. It's from the aforementioned Mr. McKinlay, confirming that he and Carol and Dick and Betsy were indeed at the Michigan game. Others included in the festivities at both the Mitchel and Dewey bistros were Caroline and TedSchoonbeck. He also mentions that he saw (you're not going to believe this) Dick Lippman at the game. He further adds:

"I've been trying hard to keep the Navy from breathing down my neck—added a cute little girl to our two boys in August and everyone is quite well and happy."

Oh, goody, I've found three more! Isn't that just champion, though? The first is a report from Milt Williams of

the semi-annual 1942 dinner at the Dartmouth Club of New York, October 9. WarrenKreter handled the affair, the first held since M Lippman went to Toledo, via Washington, D. C.

Attending were John Mendes, Dutch Schaefer, Gerry Garduno, Bob Buckalew, Tom Hunter, Al Dingwall, Bill Lowenthal, .John Hill, Murray Latz, Bob Encherman, Dave Warren, Dick Baldwin, Charlie Sturz, Art Hopkins, Frank Faruolo, Bill Friend, Scotty Matthews, Joe Tobin, Nate Ward, Jim Skinner, Grant Harrison and Bill Enos.

Milt post-scripts that the next feis will be in the early spring. In the interim there is a luncheon meeting, he points out, the first Friday of every month, at the Dartmouth Club at noon.

Now here's some real cooperation from Sam Williams '40. He writes to give us the whereabouts of his brother, Jack '42. The latter is somewhere in Korea as a captain in the United States Marine Corps. At the time of Sam's letter (Oct. 20), the guess was that Jack was in Seoul. He was called back as the result of his connection with an organized reserve unit. The unit was sent to Camp Pendleton, Calif., and immediately broken up for reassignment. Jack is attached to Operations, First Marine Division, and attached but quick. His brother calculates that Jack arrived in Korea exactly 27 days after leaving civilian life.

And now, a smidgin of clippings from the Alumni Mag's service. First, is the wedding at Cleveland, September 2, of Miss Georgina M. McKee to Charles F. Close, of Cleveland Heights. The clipping said that after a wedding trip to New Hampshire, Mr. and Mrs. Close will be at home at 5344 Knollwood, Parma.

The Union City (N. J.) Hudson Dispatch gives us a birth announcement, August 31, of a daughter, Carol Lynn, to Rev. and Mrs.Robert W. Cook of 103 Paterson Street, Jersey City. Rev. Mr. Cook has been the pastor of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Jersey City, since June, 1948. He was ordained, December 5, 1945, at Emanuel Baptist Church, Newark, after completing his studies at the Eastern Baptist Seminary, Philadelphia. The Cooks have one other child, Ann, aged four.

Guests at the Hanover Inn in late September and early October included GeorgeTobias Jr., Dr. and Mrs. P. J. Costello and Mr. and, Mrs. Harry O. Bartlett.

Next year means that reunion's getting closer! See you then.
