Memorial Fund Chairman, SIDNEY A. DIAMOND 598 Madison Ave., New York 22, N. Y.
Hello, gang. Here we go for another month and for some reason babies are a very prominent part of the news. Here we are 15 years out of college with practically all of us married and settled down and what happens—we keep having babies. Seems as though we're doing our best to keep the race from dying out. Well, we could do worse than populate the earth with Dartmouth progeny.
To start with, Joe and Marjorie Knap had their first child, a son and heir, on October 2, 1950. Joe is a Junior and carried on the tradition by naming his first-born Joseph D. Knap 111. Pop is with the advertising agency of Badger Browning Sc Hersey in New York City and is assistant to the President.
Next comes Joe Parrachini and good wife Sue who have just added a boy to their stable, Robert Joseph, on October 2. Joe is with Joshua Powers in New York.
And here's number three—rather late. Dr.Johnny Gilbert in Easthampton, Mass., reports the arrival of son number two, child number three, born June 19. Unfortunately he doesn't give the child a name and for all we know he is still running around answering to "Hey, you." John was also sorry he missed reunion and well he might be.
Bob Naramore has passed along a parcel of news he has picked up recently through correspondence and personal contact:
Fred Haley, who started off writing a long letter and interrupted it to say "my brother just came in to say he had an extra ticket for this afternoon's game between Washington and U.C.L.A. so I think I'll sign off and enjoy the afternoon with him." He not only thought—he did. And we can't blame him since the Washington Huskies, as of this date, look like a good bet for the Pacific coast championship.
On December 1 Ed Offutt leaves Rochester, N. Y., and moves to Washington, D. C., where he joins the U.S. Public Health Service. He will be blessed with the imposing title of Executive Secretary of the Panel on Microbiology for the Division of Research Grants and Fellowships. With that we've run out of room. But somehow we don't feel that Ed has come close to running out of opportunities.
Bob Kugler, that old guy who used to stick pins in me via the Tear Bag, explains his absence from reunion thusly: "Sorry we didn't make it but Hilda was just recovering from a severe case of pregnantitis and that's my busy season at the soup works."
And up in Bridgeport recently at a meeting of the county civil defense coordinators Dr. Robert L. Quimby gave a talk on the medical aspects of an atomic bomb disaster.
Nary also reports on the Dartmouth-Michigan game in Detroit. "Seen at the Statler Friday Evening: Morrie and Rose Heller,Rem and Cherry Ryder, Dave and BettyWilliams, Floyd and Janet Pausing, Ernie andPolly Hedler and Frank Cornwell. At the game Nary's watchful eye also picked up Bud and Velma Hulett, Dan Reagan (in Ann Arbor for a medical meeting), Sam Milesky and Jack Blanchard. And in the eveningChuck and Mimi Moon." That Nary really gets around, doesn't he?
A telephone call from Mac McCarty gave forth with the following: Flamingo Frozen Orange Juice, which Mac is promoting and in which he is also a stock holder, is doing nicely with distribution, as of this fall, from Boston to Washington, D. C. Mac and his partners are also using Mrs. Roosevelt's new radio program to advertise their product. The inevitable blimps, of course, are flying "Flamingo" all over the Eastern seaboard—a natural for the little man in charge of lighter thanair for Doug Leigh.
Mac also reports that Tom Lane, V.P. with McCann Erickson, Advertising, has had quite a siege with a blood clot in his leg. Tom was in bed for seven weeks, got up and came to work and promptly was returned to bed for another week. As of now he is back on the job.
Mac had word from Fitz Donnell while the latter was in Los Angeles celebrating the first flight of United Air Lines between LA. and Honolulu. Being a radio station manager apparently has its pleasant moments as well as its headaches.
Mac also heard from Cam Duncan who is leaving the great state of Texas temporarily for a business meeting in Tampa, Fla., and who hopes to be in New York for a quickie sometime before Christmas. We'll roll out the largest carpet we have in the big city to welcome him but it probably won't hold a candle to those Texas rugs.
Lou Bookheim vacationed on Nantucket Island this past summer, and while enjoying the boat trip over, ran into Jim Hughes, who was heading for Martha's Vineyard. Apparently their conversation netted to the fact that everyone was fine because Lou couldn't recall any world-shaking information.
Tom Swift has confirmed his new address at 3325 Olive St., Madison, Wis., and savs. "Am studying Dairy Husbandry and doing research work in Animal Nutrition at Wisconsin University." I've got three little animals of my own that can stack away a hell of a lot of nutrition three times a day, if Tom wants to expand his activities.
Also have a rumor, unconfirmed by the gent himself, that Charlie French, who has been selling chemicals since way back in 1937, has changed outfits and is now with Pfist : Chemical Cos. Is this the bare-faced truth, Charlie, and are you still peddling around New York?
Population increase item: Since starting this column an announcement has arrived that little Miss Ellen Muzzy arrived October 28 in Boston. Parents, of course, are chocolatemaker Dick and his good wife Polly.
Fred Hickock, whose move from Wilton, N. H., to the Ware, Mass., Cooperative Bank was reported last month will make his home in nearby Hardwick Center. Fred is a member of the Bank Auditors and Comptrollers Association, the American Institute of Banking and is also a recent graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers, N. J. And with all that background I'll bet he still has trouble balancing the check book at the *:nd of the month.
HERE AND THERE
It was a lousy rainy day in New Haven, but there was a healthy turn out of '35s on hand to watch Dartmouth win. Seen in the stands: Sven Karlem, Tom Lane, Bob Sellmer (hey, the beard's gone!), Art Fisher, BobMaida, Charlie Nayor, Bob Roundey, PaulCummings, Greg Karch, Bill Nevin, BobNaramore, Reg Bankart, Ernie Draper, CliffMills, Paul Hilli, Bill Feingold, Paul Rogers,Bob Busey and Jim Higgins.
Curt Lamorey recently made a flying trip to the U.S. from Casa Blanca. He managed to get in a weekend with his parents in Barrs, Vt., and then spent two weeks in New York at the Texaco home office attending a conference of foreign managers.
Once again it is our sad lot to report the passing of another class mate. The Necrology Section of this issue contains notice of the death of Alan Kline in Chicago. The sympathies of the class have been extended to his wife Elinor and their two sons.
And now we close for another month, this time calling your attention to the following list of Alumni Fund contributors, the longest in the history of the class. We're pretty darn proud of it. Hope you are, too.
