The luncheon on December 31 for applicants and their fathers was the largest event of its kind ever held by The Dartmouth Club of Cleveland. More than 50 applicants, and 250 people in all, filled the ballroom of Hotel Cleveland.
The principal speaker for the occasion was Ross McKenney, who delighted the audience with his amusing stories and tales of woods lore.
Judge Nelson Brewer, one of Cleveland's outstanding citizens and the judge of the Probate Court of Cuyahoga County, also spoke. Judge Brewer spoke as a non-alumnus father of a Dartmouth son, Jack Brewer '49. Although Judge Brewer's remarks were uncensored, the College fared very well at his hands.
Ted Bamberger '50 spoke on behalf of undergraduates. Other speakers included President Howard Schuemann '33, Alumni Councillor Bud Petrequin '25, and Scott RogersJr. '40, chairman of the Interviewing Committee.
In addition to this large program, movies of the 1949 football season were shown. LouWeitz '35 was chairman of the luncheon and, as usual, did an excellent job. We heard from many applicants the pleasing news that in their schools Dartmouth is the most popular of the eastern colleges. Our problem now is to maintain and increase the tremendous interest being shown in Dartmouth among high school seniors in this area and thereby obtain another outstanding delegation for Hanover next year.
The new roster of The Dartmouth Club of Cleveland has been distributed and includes, in addition to the names of alumni, the names of present undergraduates, the officers and committee members of the Club, and a complete list of past presidents of the Club. Bob Williamson '44, Jack Childs '09, and BudPetrequin '25, as well as past president NelsonRanney '30 and President Howard Schuemann '33, deserve a word of appreciation for their contributions to this work.
