November - some years ago now - saw the arrival of these later additions to the Dartmouth scene. A birthday Wah-Hoo-Wah for: Austin, Barrows, Brown P. H., Campbell, Elkins, Gould, Foss, Hobbs, Humphrey, Piatt, Ross, Saltmarsh, Stratton S. C., Webber.
There may be deeper chagrin than mine, there may be more solid proof of senility, but I don't know what it is! Last Christmas, "Ken" Grant was kind enough to send me a most interesting letter about Ted andMarion Main - and that welcome information became enmeshed in a pile of Christmas mail and just now came to light. My abject apologies, "Chick." It appears that the good Mains have decided against California retirement in favor of the social activities and the warm bathing of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and are now luxuriating in a brand new apartment overlooking the Gulf Stream. Good golf to you, Ted, good bridge, and good companionship.
Paul and Mary Perkins honored us with a brief visit recently and added to our social standing by parking their Cadillac in our little driveway. Paul is retired from his regular job with the Veterans Administration but now acts as an Investment Counselor to some Dartmouth men who heeded the injunction, "Gather ye rosebuds while you may."
Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, N. H., is erecting a new chapel of colonial design to be named and furnished in honor of our departed classmate "Bob" Hopkins. It is a fitting memorial to one of our best loved classmates who served on the Board of Trustees of this school for many years.
Our Class Treasurer, "Charlie" Batchelder, has just undergone a double cataract operation. We know the eye-surgeon who did the job and we know "Charlie's" resilience of youth, so we are not surprised to hear of his good recovery.
George Gilbert writes that he has moved to the north country from Lower Merion, Pa., where he was headmaster at the high school. He sends this news on a card showing two youngsters actively shooting down the ski slopes, but we can't determine which one is George.
And now good letter from "Jack" Hanna- one of our most distinguished barristers - from the University of Louisville in Kentucky. "Jack" has had a deservedly rising star in the law faculty at Columbia and has written several books in his chosen field. Added to these distinctions is the fact that "Jack" is now an honorary Kentucky Colonel. I think, however, we better continue to call him "Jack." He'd like it better.
In the department of distinguished professional men let's note that "Ducky" Drake reports that he has some minor bronchial handicap which he says is difficult for a man who likes to talk. Well, "Ducky," you have done a lot of other things besides talk and all Massachusetts is grateful for what you have done.
"Ben" Quarles, who recently recovered from a stormy summer in the hospital, wrote from Miami in March that his health is greatly improved and that now his only vocation is fishing and his avocation is reading. It seems like a very fortuitous grouping of circumstances. More power to you, "Ben."
In the April issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE "Win" Snow asks rather wistfully if any of us remember the three students who went down the Connecticut on two logs with only one student clothed. "Win," I should say we do! Adam Sutcliffe and I happened to be on the bank of the river when we heard a wild Indian yell and saw you standing up on this queer contraption. We saw all six feet of you - and I mean all.
Your secretary has a friend in La Quinta, Calif. She's Irish and called down some sort of Irish curse on Walter Netsch unless he wrote us telling "of what and why." "Walt" retired years ago after 38 years with Armour & Company during which he rose to meatly heights (look him up in "Who's Who"). La Quinta is near Palm Springs which is full of movie stars, golf, and ascending real estate values. "Walt" spends a good deal of time chasing par, fishing, and hunting rare rocks. His son is in Chicago with the imposing architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he is chief of design, and largely responsible for the Air Academy at Colorado Springs, the Naval Coast Guard School in Monterey, Calif., and other outstanding buildings. "Walt's" daughter is the wife of Dr. William Kerr, Vice President and Business Manager of Northwestern University. That is a lot of distinction for one family, but we are not at all surprised.
Secretary, Farwell Lane, New London, N. H.
Treasurer, 165 Marlboro St., Wollaston 70, Mass.
