The 43rd Annual Dinner Meeting was held at the Union League in Philadelphia on April 13, with 102 alumni in attendance. President Ernie Wright '28 directed the business meeting which included a discussion of a proposed visit by the Dartmouth Glee Club next spring. The members at the meeting were unanimous in their desire to hear our Glee Club on Monday evening, April 2, 1951. This action has subsequently been confirmed by the executive committee of the association.
Treasurer Parser Soule '31 pointed out that the Philadelphia Association held eight separate activities of interest during the year 1949-50.
Dr. George A. Hahn '32, chairman of the nominating committee made his report and the following officers were elected for 1950-51: President, Parker Soule Jr. '31; Vice President, Victor C. Smith '17; Treasurer, William R.MacKinney '32; Secretary, Joseph M. Flounders '47; Executive Committee, William Housel '42 and Binney Tower '43, Jim Tindle '36 continues as a member of the executive committee for two more years.
Sherry Baketel '20, who has rendered yeoman service as our Alumni Councillor since 1946, expressed his appreciation to the members for their cooperation with him on this highly important function. He also recalled the pleasure with which he regards his experience in that capacity. Jack Heston '28 was introduced to the membership as Sherry's successor on the Alumni Council.
Following a thoroughly pleasant cocktail hour and dinner, Club President Ernie Wright introduced the speaker of the evening, President Dickey. We were delighted to have him with us once more and found his talk highly interesting. Dr. Dickey made a novel approach to the role of Dartmouth in the development of men when he cited three voluntary activities in Hanover which are major educational forces: The Dartmouth Outing Club with its emphasis on "the development of a man's self-reliance.... sense of responsibility and respect for property"; the Dartmouth Players, always "one of the purest and most effective forms we have for passing on the essence of human experience and values," reached a new zenith with the recent outstanding production of Shakespeare's difficult King Lear; the Undergraduate Council showed itself to be a dynamic example of applied democracy when it recently conducted a plebiscite concerning action to be taken regarding the discriminatory membership prohibitions of certain naClonal fraternity charters. 90% of the student body participatedl Dr. Dickey concluded his talk with a very logical and perspicacious estimate of the world the college faces."
