Miss Charlotte Ford, an honorary member of our Class and also the indefatigable and extraordinarily efficient Alumni Recorder of the College, has dug up the fact that the one member of our Class residing overseas has died. The death of Benjamin Martin Chandler took place December 4, 1948. Search is being made for further facts about Chandler on which a notice in the obituary column may be based. He was with us through Sophomore year.
Mrs. Sumner H. Babcock, who, as the daughter of Matt and Grace Jones, many of the Class have met, writes as follows:
"I do want to send you a real thank-you—and through you the Class of.. '94—for the beautiful spray of red roses and white snap dragon which came to Mother's services. The Class of '94 meant so much to Mother and Dad and their thoughtfulness at this time means a great deal to Matt and me."
As has so often been the case in the secretary's experience, Mrs. Bud Lyon took care of this important matter for the Class.
The Boston Globe of July 4 carried a dispatch from Keene, N. H., which nnounced a legacy of over $100,000 to the College from the estate of the late Chief Justice John E.Allen. This legacy of one-half the entire estate becomes available by reason of the death of Mrs. Allen which took place in Keene, June 20. It will be remembered that Jack died in 1945 and his widow was given a life interest in his estate. Other legacies were given to institutions in Keene and in Cheshire County, especially to the Congregational Church in Surry and to the Town of Surry in memory of Jack's mother and of his aunt and uncle. The legacy to the College is in memory of his father, Judge William H. H. Allen, a member of the Class of 1855. The income may be used for general purposes or the principal may be used in part or in full, so run the terms of the bequest. Isn't this the largest bequest yet made to the College by any member of the Class?
Mr. and Mrs. Kent Knowlton announced the marriage of their daughter Marjorie Janet to Mr. Maurice Samuel Peizer Saturday, August 25 at Nutley, N. J.
An interesting word comes from Ruth Sawyer who from time to time has sent this columnist word about '94 men from her vantage point in Franklin, N. H., where she and her mother have been living. Just now she is working with the American Red Cross Disaster Service and when in Lincoln, Neb., she got in touch with Decker Field. She writes:
"Today I took time to telephone to Mr. Field and enjoyed my chat with him very much. I don't recall that I have ever met him but felt a mutual tie through the Class of '94. He said he had recently celebrated his 79th birthday and was still 'rattling around.' He sounded real chipper."
