I regret having to report the loss of three of our classmates: Jack Cannell, in Colorado Springs on January 18; Ben Cardozo, in New York City on February 17; and Shep Sheppard, in New Haven, on February 28.
Mary Cannell, in a letter telling of Franks passing, included this interesting tidbit: "Sandy Mills will be wondering where his notice and obituary in the Darimouth Magazine is. Frank was in the habit of phoning Sandy on the first snowfall of the season in Colorado Springs and asking him to meet him at Tanzy's. They often exchanged memories of Dartmouth."
Along this same vein, I received an interesting letter from Mark Harty '73 about his uncle, Phil Harty—thoughts I was unaware of and did not include in his obituary. "He was my favorite uncle and surrogate father since the 1981 death of my father, Bill 39.1 will always remember on my wedding day at Dartmouth where he gave me his DOC pin at our reception. A small thing, perhaps, but it meant a great deal to me and still does. He attended Harvard Business School and was in the Navy during WWII. He joined the International Abrasive Corp./Exolon Cos. and, over a45-year career rose to become the vice president in charge of sales, and eventually president, succeeding my father. Along the way Uncle Phil had an equally distinguished career. He was enshrined in the Buffalo Tennis and Squash Club Hall of Fame. He competed internationally and was Canadian national senior doubles champion two or three times and, before I forget, he was ranked nationally in the United States as a junior tennis player back in the thirties. Growing up and knowing that my Uncle Phil was a Dartmouth man made me want to be one as well."
There was more and he concludes: "I thought this information might be helpful foreither your class column or for a DAM obituary." Thanks, Mark, we appreciate learning of the highlights of Phil's post-Dartmouth life. I wish there could be more sons, daughters, nephews and nieces, who would write about their Dartmouth relatives!
Since you will be receiving this edition in mid- or late-June, I want to remind you, once again, of our upcoming mini-reunion over Yale weekend on October 11-12. While we're talking reunions, may I ask that you give serious thought to our 65 th next June—the dates are June 6,7 and 8, 2003.
