Superb work Big Chief Widmayer! This columnist got his November MAGAZINE this very morning, November 4. Since when has the MACAZINE appeared as early in the month as that! To show his appreciation the writer of this column is taking particular pains, late this afternoon, to dictate his jottings for December in order that they may reach Hanover under the wire tomorrow morning, November 5.
According to the forewarning a month ago the lead item in this month will be the Matt Jones Fall Round-Up which was held at the Norwich Inn, October 3. The Gentleman Who Sits in the Seat of the Scornful .might have said "You old Octogenarians, aren't you content with getting out fifty-three people at your Sixty-fifth Reunion without having any Round-Up this fall? Why are you so keen to get together so often?" To which the answer seems to be, "The oftener the '94 family gets together, at this stage of the game, the better." At all events five of the ten members of the Class showed up at the Norwich Inn, as follows: Colby, Marden, Merrill, Parker, Stone. They were all accompanied by their "caretakers"; two, Merrill and Stone, by their wives; two, Colby and Marden, by their daughters; and one, Parker, by his son and daughter-in-law.
The total attendance was twenty-four, which shows that the Octogenarians were surrounded by a substantial Bodyguard. Four of these were wives of deceased members - Mesdames Gifford, Lyon, Mudgett, Sawyer; eight were sons and daughters, with the husband of one and the wife of another - Catharine Jones Babcock and Mr. Babcock, Eleanor Lyon Baldwin, Ira Gordon Colby Jr., and Mrs. Colby, Vernon Mudgett, Hope Mudgett Pratt, Ruth Sawyer; a granddaughter, Eleanor Colby, made the twenty-fourth.
Don Colby gets the "Cup" for having the largest family representation - namely, five. To make the notation complete it may be added that the names not given above in the "caretaker" list were - Louise Colby, Clare Brockunier, Lucy Merrill, Anne Stone, Lloyd and Arlene Parker.
Letters from absentees were read, as usual, and other information shared, and again, as usual, all this will be summarized in later columns.
It was agreed that the Norwich Inn was a Number One place for this gathering, especially the enclosed piazza where the meal was served.
Our oldest member celebrated his 92nd birthday October 20. In behalf of the Class Arthur and Anne Stone visited John Cassin and his wife and left behind $92.00 to remind him of the years that he had achieved. They report that while "Bar" stays in bed practically all the time he seemed as cheerful as ever.
This naturally leads to listing of the '94 birthdays so that future ones can be remembered with greetings:
