The news notes of the D.O.C. of Northern California published in the November 1950 issue of the MAGAZINE appear to have anticipated by about eleven months the situation regarding our cabin at Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada as it stands today. The cabin is now habitable and available for use for up to twelve persons. The walls are tight, the windows are glazed and a finished floor is laid. There are cots, a wood-burning cook stove, which supplies a moderate amount of heat, and oil and electric heating units to supplement this, when required. There are also electric hot plates and can openers for those who need such things when cooking meals, a sufficient supply of cooking utensils and table ware, and adequate lighting.
The tentative scale of fees for occupancy are very definite, with preferential rates for those who have borne the heat and burden of the days spent in achieving this objective, and for those who have supported the Club through fees and dues in past years.
Priorities for occupancy are: Members of the Club in good standing have worked at Donner; other members of the Club in good standing; others who have worked at Donner; former members of the Club; Dartmouth men less than three years out of College or resident in Northern California or Nevada less than two years.
It remains now to use the cabin to the fullest extent throughout the year. It is ideally situated for winter sports and that is perhaps its main purpose for the younger men, their families and friends. But we know it is also ideal for summertime use. There is plenty to do in the immediate vicinity with Lake Mary just outside the door. Donner Lake is less than 6 miles away and Lake Tahoe about 22 miles.
The major chore from here on will be to keep the reservations and priorities unsnarled. There are twelve spaces for any one night and about sixteen weekends, with good skiing in prospect, not including the weekend of Washington's Birthday which is reserved for the annual meeting of the Club.
Speaking of annual meetings, the one for this year was held on May 20 at Redwood Regional Park at a picnic to which members of the Association and their families were invited. Dave Bender '31 was elected president; Alan Grant '4.3, vice-president; and Tavy Taylor '28, Carl Ward '32 and Bob Allen '33, directors.
Others present at a very enjoyable picnic were Bill Brown 'l9, Nick Carter '4l, Mack Carter '46, Art Chimiklis '4l, John Harder '49, Bruce Leegur '46, Brant McCullough '3l, Joe O'Hare '40, Dave Smith '35, Mrs. Selden Smith '97, Larry Sommer '35, Don Tenney '40, Paul Webb .'39, ..Bob White '4l and Dick White '39. All the married men brought their wives and families and most of the others a lady guest,—all told, 74 persons.
