Giving up the life of an industrialist to enter the Capuchin Franciscan Order of the Roman Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph T. Adams (Thomas A. Adams '25) was ordained to the priesthood on September 8 at St. Clement's Eucharistic Shrine in Boston.
Formerly president and director of the Manhattan Refrigerating Company in New York and the Union Terminal Cold Storage Company in Jersey City, he was the recipient of the first quadragesimo anno medal of the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists for his contribution to the "promotion of the Christian solution to industrial problems." Four years ago he resigned his business connections and entered the Capuchin Franciscan Friary at Milton, Mass. The Capuchins, who are noted for their austerity, wear a hooded brown habit and permit their beards to grow. Their ministry is devoted to alleviating the lot of the poor.
Father Adams was ordained by Archbishop Richard J. Cushing, and celebrated his first mass on September 10 at Westfield, Pa., in St. Catherine's Chapel, built in 1906 by his father and his uncle in memory of their mother. He plans to study at the Capuchin College in Washington and then to return to the Friary at Milton.
