Ellsworth B. Buck '14, three times a member of Congress from the 16th District of New York, has accepted the chairmanship of the Richmond County Republican Committee upon urging from Republican voters of Staten Island.
Active for some time in a grass roots revolt within the Republican ranks against the 8-year regime of Edward A. Ruppell, whose resignation as county chairman was recently forced by revelations at public hearings of the State Crime Commission, Mr. Buck's willingness to take charge and to initiate a reform movement was acclaimed by the people of his community as well as party members. One of the terms of his acceptance was his insistence that he have a free hand and a truly representative committee to work with. Mr. Buck, who has a record for honesty and outstanding capability in public service, was a member of the Board of Education in New York from 1935 through 1944, serving as president for 1942-'44. He resigned when he ran for Congress, of which he was a member during the 78th, 79th and 80th sessions, declining to stand for re-election for the 81st. He is Chairman of the Board of the L. A. Dreyfus Cos.
In an editorial commending his election as county Republican chairman, appearing in the New York HeraldTribune, it is stated, "Mr. Buck has the confidence of his party and entire community. He knows exactly what needs to be done and can be depended upon to act in the general interest. The urgency of political sanitation in Richmond has been demonstrated. We can expect Mr. Buck to do the job that is needed."
