U. S. Attorney
November 1951

MYLES J. LANF, '28 was sworn as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York on September 17, succeeding Irving Saypol who resigned upon nomination to the State Su- preme Court. It is expected that Presi- dent Truman will forward his name to the Senate for the full appointment. Mr. Lane has served as Mr. Saypol's chief assistant since April 1950 and has been Assistant United States Attorney since 1937. As U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the major districts in the country, he will be in charge of all federal prose- cutions in eleven counties.

Pledging war specifically against the narcotics traffic, Mr. Lane also stated his intention of exerting "every effort in investigating, exposing and prose- cuting, wherever prosecuting is indi- cated, all subversive activities." Last year he received a citation from the federal grand jury for his outstanding presentation of evidence which led to the indictment of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell in the atom spy cases.
