I quote from Laura Hardy's letter of June 30, 1951.
"Thank you for your congratulations regarding my son's election as President of the Dartmouth Alumni. I am especially proud as it indicates that others appreciate another development of his life than that wholly of a business success. I only hope that his new position will not be too exacting as he is already very busy. The Ryerson Steel Co. is the largest warehouse business in the world having 13 branches or warehouse centers. I often think how proud Charles would have been." He sure would have and so is the class of '90 of which he was the efficient .secretary for so many years.
Dr. Perry Boynton sent the secretary a copy of the tribute rendered by the pastors of the church where they worshipped at the funeral of Mrs. Boynton. It is very beautiful and gives some idea of the influence of her personality in domestic, social and civic affairs. I hope arrangements can be made so that members and widows of members of 'go can receive copies.
I was thrilled at the encomium John D. Rockefeller gave Hoppy and the way in which he manifested it. Again I say how fortunate has been Dartmouth to have had two presidents of the caliber of Tucker and Hopkins; and now comes along John Dickey who has already demonstrated that he is a great president and a wise administrator.
'90 takes a special interest in these annual Alumni Fund drives, of which the last has been the greatest and most remarkable. It was a member of '90 who foresaw that his Alma Mater would more and more need the financial aid of her alumni, and so he started the creation of a fund that later became the annual and present contribution of its alumni to keep her out of the red. He foresaw that all the liberal arts colleges would more and more have to depend on the financial aid of their alumni. His greatest monument is Ginn and Company of which he became its first President. The man I have in mind is HenryHilton, the miracle man, for that is just what he was in the realm of finance.
