Mickey Holmes, New Jersey oil merchant, won "distance honor", coming up from Newark for the night-before-Harvard-game reunion at the University Club. There were ten other Tenners, besides chairman Bones Jones, to greet him: Maurice Blake, Charlie Fay, AlFerguson, Ray Gorton, Ted Hill, Russ Meredith, Walter Norton, Earle and Roge Pierce and Slip Powers. Several others had planned to be with us but failed to make it. A number of the older classes joined together in this one big party. On his return postal Bill Tucker suggested, "... next time try including the ladies!" Well, it is a fact that our wives have always been able to "get together" and make our reunions more enjoyable, so maybe Bill has something. Any comments? Our men were so scattered by the seating for the game that it is not possible to give a complete record but we know that, in addition to those at the reunion, these were on hand Art Allen, ArtLord, Nort Cushman, Jim McPherson and John Vander Pyl. Nearly 70 men used their return postals. Did you? If not, look for it or write a line or two in a letter and let us know something about yourself or other Tenners. Be different. Do it now, not "later." As Treasurer Pierce would scream, "Postals cost money.Use it."
Latest word from Hap Hinman says, "Not much improvement so I'm booked tomorrow (October 25) for Dick's House to spend a few days there. Cheerio." On his return postal he wrote, "Shoulder's better and worse at times but I'm going to live come hell and high water." The fellows are definitely all pulling for you, Hap. Keep on fighting! I hope you fellows noted that fine tribute Nat Burleigh, 1911 Secretary, gave Hap in the October MAGAZINE. It was a fine appraisal of Hap's record and his influence by our "next door neighbor" and we are deeply appreciative.
Speaking of cost of postals, as we were, if you wait until after January 1 to use yours, it will cost you another cent. Take the hint. Of financial matters, Earle Pierce, dues collector extraordinary, reports that to date he has chalked up as "paid" 138 Tenners. Says he, "Purty good, but I am expecting many more. Probably have to send another dun. Soon I'll push again."
Slip Powers and I were in Hanover, middle of October, for the meeting of Bequest committee chairmen of the classes since '26. In accord with the Development Council's program we will cooperate in the Bequest Plan. Slip now becomes 1910's Bequest committee chairman and will aim for bequests rather than Memorial funds. You will hear from Slip very soon. Give serious consideration to his suggestions. The College deserves your effort.
We have had to "close ranks" again. PaulWhitcomb died in June but we did not learn of it until Earle's request for dues brought word from Paul's mother. Then on October 7 Don Palmer and Dave Johnson passed away. Eight Tenners gone since June underlines the fact that such losses will continue heavy from now on. Our deep sympathy is felt for the families of these fine fellows. We are going to miss their loyal support to Class and College. Our sympathy is particularly deep for RussPalmer. Slip flew to Cleveland for Dave's funeral. See In Memoriam pages of this MAGAZINE.
Herb Woods has retired from the "hectic atmosphere of Washington" for the "quiet and serene air" of Deep River, Conn. Jess Wilson called it "quits" October 1 after 40 years with the Lumber Mutual Fire Insurance Co. He finds Kittery Point, Me., a good place "to ponder over what to do next." Harold Robinson and wife Mary, our retired missionaries from China, have gone back across the continent to Lafayette, Calif., where they are living with their son Harold '39, practicing physician. Robbie and his son ran into Willi Wilkinson at a luncheon session of the San Francisco Dartmouth Club. This was their first meeting since graduation. Tom Steward's return postal, Minneapolis postmark, says, "My regards to Tenners who remember me. Am now retired and 'inviting my soul,' though to exactly what I am inviting it, I am not surebut not to this year's Harvard game."
Bic Willis says they have a three-man Dartmouth Club at Goose Bay, Labrador, to which point he is "commuting" from Westfield, N. J., to help Army Engineers and Air Corps build the air base. The Jim Porters, after tripping through Canada, stopped for a meal in Hanover, phoned to Andy Scarlett and LarryBankart, then moved on to the Earle Pierce's for a couple of days, before returning to their Cambridge, Md., home. There's more news but "Stop," says the management. Room isneeded for the list o£ 1910 contributors tothe Alumni Fund.
