It was a pleasant surprise running into Bert Kent when I was in Hanover for the Trustees Dinner in celebration of the 200th founding of the College. Bert was there as a former member of the Alumni Council and my invitation to the dinner was as class president. We had time to discuss Dartmouth and civic activities in our respective home neighborhoods. Bert is looking forward to our "60th" in June.
A letter from Whit Eastman tells of the gifts by Mrs. Elliot of Mike Elliot's books to the 1910 archives in Hanover. Whit and Karen left in mid-December for their annual Florida visit after which they will move on to the Galapagos Islands. The latter stop undoubtedly means more check-ups on the birds. They expect to be with us in June in Hanover. They have been making these bird trips for thirty years and usually add about 100 birds to their grand total. Karen makes use of the camera and keeps busy between trips lecturing on the subject.
A card from Thayer Smith: "You've raised again nostalgic memories by your Christmas greetings which were forwarded to me out here. I came out (by auto) to spend the Christmas season with my three California sons. Started in early December and encountered some difficulties with snow and slippery roads so am returning through the deep south to the Atlantic seaboard. Expect to be back in Woodbury by the end of January and in Hanover June 12-14. I trust no abdominal agony will prevent your full participation in our 60th and that 1970 will be all through a healthy and happy year."
Florida will probably see the usual influx of Tenners. Heine Barrett reports that he is looking forward to a possible visit and the Allen Dorrs have it in mind. BonesJones on his Christmas card stated that they definitely will be among those present. Some of them will certainly be surprised if they left the north before Christmas and return before late spring. Some hardy northerners believe it will be 4th of July before the snow disappears.
One New Englander who adopted Florida as his home has really settled down. NedLoveland puts accent on the quiet life when he writes "The speedometer on my car says 1900 miles since Aug. 1, 1968 and most of that was within city limits." Ned is proud of his four granddaughters. He says "at one time they all were in foreign countries from Japan to Sweden and traveling in Europe and Africa. Some different from our travels at their age."
We have to report the loss of another Tenner. The Reverend Fred Brown passed away January 4. Fred always showed interest in the Class and the College. In recent years he has been unable to get about.
