At the annual fall meeting of the Trustees of the College, one of the two new trustees elected was Tom Curtis. When you consider how few positions there are in relation to the College which have as great distinction or as high a rank, you can appreciate the measure of the honor that has come to our class. It is a not inconsiderable by-product of a successful campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives, and a recognition that there is much more behind Tom's election than the plotting of politicians.
Dick Cleaves has left Japan and is now living in British Columbia, where he seems to have settled in large measure because of the wonderful yachting territory. At least that's what the marine editor of the Vancouver Sun would have his readers believe. An article in the edition of August 13 describes the unloading of Dick's 38-foot cabin cruiser, which he bought out of war surplus in Japan. Dick has explained his plans in a most interesting letter, which I can quote only in part:
"I don't feel quite so remote as I did when we were living in Japan. Our decision to leave was taken without a great deal of hesitation. Business conditions have changed a great deal in Japan in the past few months due principally to the attitude of the Japanese toward foreign business men. . . . Fortunately I was among those who were able to do something about the handwriting on the wall, so I liquidated business interests, sold everything we didn't want to bring with us, and have come to Vancouver We have come to Vancouver because we have never seen the Pacific Northwest, have always thought it would be a wonderful place to live, and feel the need of finding a place to settle. If there is ever a family that should be in one place, it is this one. We now have four children—Perrigold who is 9, Peter who is 7, Susan who is 4 and who started school just today, and little Richy who was born in Japan in April. We have stuff scattered all over—New Jersey, lowa, Illinois, Tokyo and here. I hope that this is our last geographical move, but I am not holding my breath.
"We are working on a mining property here on which we have an operator's option. We have been diamond drilling the property since June hoping to build up enough tonnage of iron ore to warrant the large investment needed to start the mining. Our proven tonnage continues to build up and assays look good but it is still too soon to know for sure. If this doesn't come through we are hoping that something else will develop as we are really sold on this country . ,
"I hope that anyone here or passing through will get in touch with us. Our address is 4234 Evergreen Ave., Cypress Park, Sherman Post Office, B.C. Because we are not in the book I'll give you the telephone number, too, West 148-Y-l. We are living right on the waterfront so I can assure any visitor in season of being able to go out after salmon without having to take his eyes off his scotch and soda on the patio. Maybe some of the fishing experts in the class can come and give me lessons—we see all the other boats catching nice salmon right off our beach but I am still buying mine at the store. Maybe I shall break the ice this weekend.
"Please remember me to any of the old gang that you see."
