Memorial Fund Chairman, CHARLES D. DOERR 99 White Plains Rd., Bronxville, N. Y.
I got sold by my own eloquence in the October column and drove up to New Haven for the Yale game. I had my ten-year-old Michael along and he's good company. Still there were times on the trek when I was reminded mostly of the refrain in the part of the Passover eve service where the assemblage joins in with the Hebrew word "dayenu," which means, "it would have been sufficient." The passage, in paraphrase, goes something like this: "If I had driven only 300 miles to the game, and there had been no rain, dayenu. If there had been rain, but it had not descended in a downpour, dayenu. If it had poured, but we had seen the game on television, dayenu. If Dartmouth had not won, dayenu, dayenu, dayenu, forever." The amazing thing to me is how many actually went to the game. There was nothing inaccurate in the Weather Bureau prediction: "Rainy, raw and rather windy"—this despite John Keller's promise of the Bureau's cooperation by sending him to Toledo, Ohio (where he should be receiving congratulations on the arrival on Oct. 2 of red-headed Kathryn Louise Keller). The pre-game picnic was something of a washout, partly because it was so hard to recognize anyone under the brims of dripping hats and bundled to the beard in the greatest collection of makeshift and permanent rain deflectors ever devised. The following I actually saw, however: Art Allen with wife and two children; Jim Ballou and wife; Ray Bartlett and wife; Buz Burrows and wife; Marv Chandler; Dick Cleaves home for a while from Japan; Jim Downs; Brownie Dickinson and wife; Bob Fendrich and wife; Ping Ferry and wife; Dick Hazen and son; Joe Fanelli and wife and son all the way from Arlington, too, in the dayenu class; Fred Gage and wife; SamEnglander; Irv Kramer and wife and two of their children; Tom Dublin; Bob Hosmer;Lee Potter; Butch Modarelli and son; BoWentworth and wife; Ed Marks and wife home for a while from Switzerland; and Jim Flint. There may have been some wives that I didn't know about; I got some of the funniest reactions when I'd ask if a guy was there with his wife, especially if there was a lady next to him. But I had to fill the column. One wife, when she discovered who I was, practically wrote a letter to the editor right there in the west parking area. She wanted to know why I hadn't said anything about her second son's being born. I explained that the only children whose birth I know of by spontaneous annunciation are my own, and so she said she'd write me. Verb sap.
I picked up a little news: The Dickinsons now have two sons. Alfred Modarelli, who was appointed a U.S. District Judge in New Jersey, is a brother of our eloquent classmate.
Through devious channels I learn that our classmates see a number of the Dartmouth games. For example, Ping Ferry, AdeNitschelm, John Clark, Frank Gilbert and JimNorth were all at the Lehigh game, and JohnClark and John Swenson saw the Harvard game. Ade is at Stonehurst, a vacation resortsummer and winter—at North Conway, N. H. Frank Gilbert is also at a vacation spot, the Wayside Inn near Bethlehem, N. H. Jim was east for a visit from California.
Carl Baker is on a sabbatical leave from Princeton, spending it in Tucson, Ariz, where he is doing some concentrated writing. JohnWright has been wafted back into uniform as a Captain in the Army JAG of the sth Army in Chicago.
The only election news that I know of made by our class was Tom Curtis' successful campaign for Congress from the 12th Congressional District of Missouri. He deserves our hearty congratulations. His campaign literature said that his "Republicanism is vigorous, positive and keyed to the demands of our times. This is your chance to support a new kind of Republican leader." Tom will be the only classmate in Washington sent by the voters back home, a very significant difference from the rest of us. I shall watch for reports of those portions of his activities which reach the news outlets in Washington, including the Congressional Record, and keep you posted on his views, statements and progress.
The Editors asked us to hold back this month, so the list of Alumni Fund contributors could be included. If, by mistake, your name isn't there, remember that the way to correct it is by sending a check next year to our soon-to-be-named class agent.
