Thought I'd have things in fair enough shape to get out a good column this month, but no such luck. The usual lack of news situation is further complicated by the fact that, having just moved all our worldly pos- sessions, including some class notes material of questionable value, I can't find what few jottings I had to serve as the basis for this column. Fortunately, the College has decreed that the notes columns this month must be curtailed to make room for the annual accounting of the Alumni Fund. So you'll have to take pot luck at this writing.
Despite the rigors of moving, and the temporary loss of many of the tools necessary to this class job, I find our new home very enjoyable. We are hopeful that some of you who may pass this way will stop in to see us. The guest room is always available, and I know you'll find the quarters comfortable. The menu is not celebrated by Duncan Hines, but there's plenty to eat and it's wholesome. Look us up on the road map and let us hear from you. The telephone number is Westfield 2-5340 M.
Aside from some clippings and a financial statement from your Treasurer, the news is limited to your scribe's personal coverage of the Yale game this past weekend. It was truly baptism under fire—with the weather running a close second to the hurricane conditions of last year's Princeton game. The moisture never did abate, changing from rain to sleet to wet snow in the course of the afternoon. The Big Green did -nobly, closing out the Yale jinx for the fourth year running, although it was a tight squeeze.
Dizzy de Sieyes and I ventured forth to the game from Diz's new home in Darien, leaving our somewhat saner wives snugly ensconced in front of the fireplace. In spite of the stock of antifreeze we carried with us to help ward off the cold, it was nip and tuck as to which was the more inviting, the home fires or the promise of a Dartmouth victory. Fortunately, the last half of the game was worth waiting for, and we didn't regret having gotten ourselves soaked and half-frozen for the sake of witnessing the Green's better efforts against Herman Hickman's best.
There were other stalwarts representing Forty at the game. Among them, Brud Sellers and wife Ruth were there from Greenfield, Mass., in company with George Johnson, presently of Glastonbury, Conn. Ken Steele, in his last year of residency at the V. A. Hospital, Newington, Conn., stayed through to the happy end of the game, but his wife had to seek warmer quarters at the half, along with about a fourth of the other 20,000 people. John Burnap, whom the weather cannot seem to down, had done a good job of pre-game promotion. Although losing FredPorter to the weather, he lured pal BudKrone into journeying all the way from St. Louis to join him for the game. Aside from his recent encounter with New England weather, Bud is comfortably located with his wife, two daughters and a son in St. Louis, where he is assistant personnel director for McDonough (sp.) Aircraft Company. Finally, accustomed to the ups and downs of the -New Haven climate, Bob Dibble and Paul Dickerman were encountered leaving the game with still a few cans of beer unopened. In a post-game party and happy time back at the de Sieyes' manor, who should turn up but Eddie and Pat Miller—a. complete and wonderful surprise. After two girls, Ed was having difficulty getting off the subject of his fairly new, redheaded son Carl. For thoSe of you who haven't heard, Ed has a plushy setup which he has been constructing just outside of Stamford these past few years. He has added a swimming pool and lots of beautiful grounds to the house he took over during the war, and he and Pat cannot be excelled when it comes to warm hospitality (Plug).
On to other news and a recent clipping which gives us the glad tidings of Dr. HowieOliver's marriage to Mrs. Robert H. Wells, in Hanover, on September 18. Myra Jane Wells was the widowed daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur C. Barwood, of Hanover, and, since Howie's first wife's untimely death left him with two children, we think it is mighty nice that he and Myra Jane could get to- gether on a new beginning.
A birth announcement from Earle M. Reingold's wife tells us that Earle is mighty proud of a new son, Paul, their third boy, born October 22 at Concord, N. H.
That annual request for class dues is now making the rounds again. Send your fo' bucks to Don Rainie, and enjoy the rest of the MAGAZINE for another year, even if you don't get much out of this column. By the way, your Treasurer reports an accumulated surplus of $3,150 in the class coffers, with $150 net gain for the year ending August 1, 1951. The bulk of the surplus is invested safely and yielding something over 5%. I think you'll all agree that Don deserves a pine cone cluster for his excellent management bn your behalf. Give him your continued support to help keep the class solvent and saving for future assistance to classmate and College.
A Merry Christmas to all of you! Drop me a line on the back of any old scrap paper you have around. It'll be a great treat to hear from any of you!
