Fall reunion was terrific, as usual. Although it poured all day Friday (eliminating the parade) we stayed cozy and dry at the X-Club. This is the last year for that club for us, asjud Smith is not renewing his membership. Class meeting Saturday morning was well attended, with over 30 members. It was voted to increase class dues by $2.00 to cover higher magazine costs, etc., so they are now $12.00, plus the $5.00 for scholarships. It was also voted to have the 1982 fall reunion the weekend of October 2 for the Colgate game. The scholarship fund stands at $24,000, while providing $1,000 annually for the recipient.
Lem Bowen outlined our 45 th reunion program for June 14-17. Dorms will be Massachusetts Row, there will be a picnic with '36 and '38 at Storrs Pond, and President McLaughlin will speak at the dinner. Next night we dine at Reg Pierce's Inn in Lyme and watch a slide program of photos taken back in "them days" sent in by all of us to Lem. He needs lots, so mail something to him at 5 Pine Drive, Hanover. He will send them back. Don McKinlay will chair the seminar.
Mutt Ray appointed a nominating committee for the change of officers at reunion to be chaired by Chuck Bassett and consisting of Bryant, Bosworth, MacKenzie, Ray, Farwell, and Asher. Nominations or suggestions are solicited from the class send to Bassett at 1400 Mony Plaza, Syracuse, N.Y. 13202.
Tail-gating was at the Tommy Dent cabin, to which we returned after the surprising 42-7 upset of Cornell for the evening. Weather turned clear, but was quite cold.
You will recall a portion of Charley Collis's wonderful gift to establish the Gordon Bennett scholarship and to refurbish the coaches' very run-down room in Davis Field House to be known as the Gordon Bennett Lounge. It's all finished! The dedication ceremony was performed at 10:00 a.m. so we could be there. Dupree Fuller, the portrait artist selected by Charley, captured Benny perfectly in his football uniform. Seaver Peters '54, athletic director, bid everyone welcome. Mutt Ray said a few words, followed by Charley, who humorously described rooming next door to Ben for two years and getting to know him so well. Coach Yukica spoke. Then Dave Camerer gave a very moving description of how he dreamed up an idea in 1971 after John Handrahan died that someone like Ben should get recognition as an outstanding Dartmouth athlete who went on to give his life saving people in the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston. The College could not help, so it was up to the class. First, Dave put together the memorial scoreboard at Chase Field. Then, with Charley's generosity, a very sincere effort became a reality. The lounge has been completely done over, with new furniture for the use of the coaches. Besides Ben's portrait over the fireplace, the walls are adorned with pictures of Dartmouth football players since 1960. We can be very proud of Dave's idea, and Charley's generosity, as we have always been of Ben himself.
A few words about people. En route from Bridgeport, Ginny Farwell became sick, so they turned back. No word yet what happened. JackDevlin was a no-show due to Helen having a small kick-up from her recent heart operation. We were delighted to welcome the Blaisdells back Alia had a heart attack last spring but she looked better than ever. A 1 Mayer had just been released from the hospital with a disc operation, but he was allowed to drive up if he did not over-do. He took it easy! Lee and Russ Stearns were in St. Louis at a civil engineers meeting. Fred Bunce retired from G.E. four years ago, so he and Millie travel whenever possible.
Will Brown now chairs the New Hamp- shire Water Supply and Pollution Control Com- mission. He was in Hanover primarily for a meeting of the Moosilauke Advisory Committee at Robinson Hall. Furm Stanley retired from New Jersey Bell three years ago. When we asked what he did for activity, he said "nothing," but his trim figure belies that. Betsy and Bob Ross, as well as the Bosworths, had gone south. This fall meeting was later than we've ever had it before and the reaction from the group was not to make it so late again too cold and late. We missed all the fall foliage this year.
Three '37s and their spouses were togetherin Hanover for the College's Horizons program in August-Katie and Bib Bankart(front row) and Russ and Lee Stearns andCarolyn and Carl Erdman (hack row, left toright).
