Air Unit Assigned

We are happy to be able to include, as a last-minute addition to this section, the news that Dartmouth has been selected for one of the new Air Force ROTC units to be established on college campuses next fall. The wire sent to President Dickey on April 21 by Thomas K. Finletter, Secretary for Air, merely informed him of the selection of Dartmouth for one of the units, and the nature of the specialized training to be provided in the advanced portion of the program is not known for certain at press time.

Dartmouth next fall will have three ROTC units in operation. To the Navy ROTC Unit that has been a part of the College since the end of the last war will be added the Army ROTC Unit, with advanced training in Ordnance, and the newly announced Air Force ROTC. It is expected that the Air Force Unit will be the largest of the three and that, like the Army Unit, it will offer a voluntary two- year basic program and then a two-year advanced program in some Air Force specialty, such as administration and logistics. The Navy ROTC Unit has a present maximum quota of 300 men. The Army ROTC Unit, for men specializing in the physical sciences or engineering, will enroll a relatively small number of Dartmouth undergraduates. The size of the Air Force ROTC Unit at Dartmouth is one of the details lacking at the time of writing this announcement.
