Your Secretary hopes that the summer was a gay and enjoyable one for every member of the 1930 family.
Before jumping into the news file, which is, happily, considerably larger than usual, a salute should be given to Ed Schuster and his assistants for the most commendable showing of the Class of 1930 in the Alumni Fund campaign. Ed attempts to shun credit for this accomplishment by saying that it is the result of the feeling and affection of each contributing member of the Class, but we are all aware, and most appreciative, of the tremendous amount of work given to the successful campaign by Ed and his assistant Class Agents.
Reunion Chairman Charlie Ranch will henceforth be operating from a new address. On July 22 Charlie was elected a vice-president and corporator of Connecticut Savings Bank in New Haven and on September 1 he left his desk at Drexel & Cos. in New York City, where he has been for the last six years, to take over his new office in New Haven.... PatWeaver pulled himself up to another topmost rung of the radio-television ladder when he became vice-president in charge of both the radio and television networks of National Broadcasting Cos. on June 18. VicBorella was further honored late in May when he became a member of the Commerce and Industry Council of the National Urban League Pete Callaway was a visitor to Boston, and more particularly Cambridge, in early June when he attended his twentieth Reunion at Harvard Business School. Unfortunately other engagements prevented your Secretary getting together with Pete, but a telephone conversation certainly brought us up-to-date with one another.... Fran Horn attended the Republican Convention in Chicago "just to see it." He reported that Red Alcorn was a delegate to the Convention and we guess that Fred Scribner was also in attendance as representative o£ the State of Maine We also are advised that Rog Ela was at the Republican Convention and very much engaged, from a legal standpoint, in the controversy concerning the disputed delegates. Not incidentally, Fran Horn delivered the commencement address at Quinnipiac College in New Haven in June at the time that college awarded degrees upon its first senior graduating class. Fran had a long association with Quinnipiac College during its formative period as the Junior College of Commerce, but as we previously indicated, he is now executive secretary of the Department of Higher Education of the National Education Association.... Fred Scribner was chosen general counsel of the Republican National Committee in late August, which he looks forward to as offering many interesting problems. While in the political arena, Ed Butterworth, former Representative in the Massachusetts Legislature and former Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Governor's Council from the Fifth Council District.
Si Chandler has usurped the title heretofore claimed by Lee Chilcote as the father of the youngest daughter in the Class of 1930 when, on August 3, little Marie arrived in the Chandler household. This makes a delightful family for Si and Margot of two boys and a girl. ... While in the vital statistics department, a newspaper clipping" came to our attention in July of the engagement of Lt. Cmdr. George"Pebble" Stone and Miss Marjorie Stephenson of Yorkshire, England, with the report that the couple were to be married in August. We understand that Miss Stephenson (who at this date must be Mrs. Stone) has been working for the British Embassy in Washington, D. C.
Les Godwin, heretofore Chief of the Military Personnel Division of the Military Air Transport Service, was promoted in late June to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Headquarters, Military Air Transport Service. In 1946 he returned to civilian life but was recalled to active duty in July 1951. Les is treasurer and general manager of the General Oil Cos., Inc., of Medford, Mass., and has been president of the Massachusetts Oil Heating Association.
... Merrill Bush was appointed Headmaster o£ Friends Central School in Overbrook, Pa., the latter part of May. Merrill has for the past five years been with the American Unitarian Association acting as Director of the Department of Adult Education and Social Relations. He is no stranger to the Philadelphia area in as much as he was an associate professor at Teachers College, Temple University, from 1936 to 1947 and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Council of Philadelphia.... Another newspaper report of July 16 is authority for the news that "Tiny" Tasker had been named executive assistant to the vice-president and assistant general manager of Republic Aviation Corp., where heretofore Tiny has been in charge of the company's experimental and test flight activities We are sorry to report that Ranny Hobbs was involved in an automobile accident in Darien, Conn., late in July and wound up in the hospital with head injuries. However, we are assured by FreddyBowes that Ranny's recovery was rapid and complete.
It is a real pleasure to report that "Dean"Wiggin has completely recovered from a serious condition and series of operations which he has suffered during the past year and only recently was pictured in the Manchester, N. H., on the procedure and operations of the New Hampshire General Court (of which he has great knowledge from his position as former Speaker of the House in J 947) CharlieHumiston, Senior Market Analyst for the Prudential Insurance Company, addressed the Market Research and Sales Promotion classes at Fairleigh Dickinson College recently on the subject of "New Techniques in Developing Sales Potentials."
