One of the most frequent questions "What do the coaches do during the summer?" is easy to answer, at least as far as the Dartmouth coaches are concerned. They work. Football coaches Milt Piepul and John Dell Isola teamed up with hockey coach Eddie Jeremiah and soccer coach Tom Dent to build a house in Norwich for Dent under the supervision of Dartmouth workshop instructor Virgil Poling. Now if they can just build some teams as sturdy as the Dent house.. ..

Speaking of coaches, Joe Sullivan '49, Big Green halfback star in the immediate postwar era, has returned to the campus to help Doggie Julian with the freshman football team. Probably the best back in recent years, Sully was backfield coach at Georgetown University until that institution suspended gridiron activities.

Another Dartmouth coach made news during the summer when Bob Shawkey, who took over the Dartmouth baseball forces last spring, donned a New York Yankee uniform in August to hurl in an "Old Timers" game at the Yankee Stadium. This must have brought back fond memories to Bob who pitched the opening game at Yankee Stadium and was a 20-game winner for four years with the New York ball club.

Most popular man-about-town with the small fry this summer was the Indians' end coach and chief scout, Elmer Lampe, who ran the playground at the local school and piloted the school bus to Storrs Pond where Dartmouth trainer Tony Dougal and Sid Hazel ton took over.

While Hanover basked in the summer heat Dartmouth skiers Ralph Miller and Bill Tibbits found cooler weather in South America where among other things they walked off with first and second place honors respectively in the Chilean Giant Slalom Championship.

There's a familiar name on the football squad list this fall—John Dell Isola. He weighs in at 155 pounds and is a quarterback candidate who played previously at Hanover High School. He's Coach John Dell Isola's eldest son.

Football may not run in families but it helps. Big Green football brothers this year include Captain Pete Reich, brother of Alan Reich who played halfback last year; quarterback Doug Melville whose brother Jim was a tackle in 1948; end Clark Murphy, brother of football tackle Craig Murphy '51; Dave Thielscher, brother of last year's guard, Karl: and fullback Alan Staley whose brother Paul captained the 1950 team.

This year's squad is an interesting one from the point of view of extra-curricular activities. One member writes poetry in his free time; another does sketching, oil painting and murals; while several others are talented musicians. One player on his biographical data sheet answered the question "Outside Interests and Hobbies?" as follows: "Married-That's enough!" And that's enough fol the Big Green Teams section this month.
