Folks out here observe Christmas and New Year's, of course, but our really big year-end holiday is January 2, McLaughry Day, when Tuss stops by for lunch with the assembled alumni on his way back from winning another East-West Shrine game at San Francisco, a city to the north of us. To which this year was added the pleasant element of welcoming our vacationing undergraduate delegation.
President Bob Williams '26 welcomed some 60 men to the big U-shaped table at the Chapman Park Hotel. Rudy Pacht '35 and Bob Purvis '49 took up the offering; the gentry stood up to admit their names and classes in the usual round robin (Dick Benedict '34, no time-loser he, was attending on his first day here from Cleveland on his new job with Alcoa); Bill Adams '34 and MurrayHawkins '19 kicked off the newly organized recruiting system under which one alumnus handles each secondary school like an account executive; Frank Coulter's boy Lee reported ably on the second annual SoCal Undergraduates' dinner which Senior Bill Montgomery and Junior Bill Brown brought off beautifully at the Coolidge Hotel in the June; and Williams introduced Tuss. Who, as usual, gave us that wonderful feeling of being back in Hanover and inside-on all the doings. Incidentally, the Shrine has asked him to keep on head-coaching the East team as long as he's willing, so January 2 rates a red ring on our calendars for a lot of years to come.
A quick skim over the record of our undergraduates may flabbergast and delight you as much as it did me. There are only four men from our area in the senior class. But here is a partial list of their accomplishments:—Francis Lee Coulter of West L. A. is president of the Undergraduate Council, president of Green Key, and a regular on the varsity swimming team. Bruce W. Dayton of Altadena is president of Tri-Kap and manager of the ski team. William J. Montgomery of Laguna Beach is a leading spirit of the Dartmouth Players; and Vince Jones, of Long Beach, is president of Palaeopitus, president of the Interfraternity Council, president of Psi U, manager of the varsity debating team, and, as you well remember, plays a little football. Junior Bill Brown is a member of Green Key, sophomore Ferris Thompson writes sports for the Dartmouth, and the rest of the sub-seniors are fitting their shoes into the footprints of their elders. A big Wah Hoo Wah! for the kids.
Next scheduled event is Bob and CappyWilliams' third annual Winter Carnival up at Snowcrest on the weekend of February 23. Nice cabins, nice company, maybe even snow. See you there?
