Yale 7, Dartmouth i. After displaying prodigies of skill and dash against powerful Boston College on the Thursday night of Carnival weekend, the Dartmouth hockey team suddenly lost its punch against Yale and succumbed in the same one-sided fashion (11-2) they had earlier in the season at New Haven. After battling to a scoreless tie in the first period, the Green defense collapsed in the second period, during which no less than five hostile tallies swished into the Dartmouth net. In the final period, senior Hank Waters saved the Indians from a shutout by flipping a high, hard shot into the Yale goal and scoring the lone Dartmouth tally. Yale scored two more goals in this stanza.
Coach Jeremiah started the veteran Dick McMahon in the nets, with Captain John Grocutt and Irv Sherwood at defense, where they have played most of the season to date. The starting line for the Green was composed of Ted Haskell at center and Whitey Dunlap and Dan McCarthy at the wings. The boys in Green just didn't have it this time, however, and the visitors forced the play most of the way. A simple statistic tells the story more eloquently than a paragraph: during the game, the Dartmouth goalie had 48 saves, whereas his Yale counterpart had only 12. Without McMahon's outstanding activity in front of the goal, this one would really have been a rout.
Dartmouth 4, Northeastern 2. The Monday after Carnival, the boys blew hot in the Boston Arena and, playing in the second half of a collegiate double header, decisively defeated a strong Northeastern aggregation. The play of Coach Jeremiah's men was in striking contrast to their performance against Yale only two days before. In Boston, the Green took command in the second period, when they poured four goals into the net, after the teams had played a scoreless tie in the first period. The home team managed to come through with a couple in the final period, but goalie Dick McMahon held off the attackers until saved by the bell.
The Dartmouth scoring in the second period went as follows. Whitey Dunlap. easily the most improved player on the squad, made the first goal on an unassisted dash down the ice. Dan McCarthy scored the second with an assist from Captain John Grocutt. Dick Leary shoved in the third one during a scramble in front of the Northeastern net. The final goal was a thing of beauty, with three men collaborating in the score. Grocutt sent the puck out of the defense zone, whereupon John Titus took it up the ice, heading for the corner. He then dropped the puck behind him, according to plan, and Seav Peters slapped it into the net. Again, however, in final analysis the plaudits must go to goalie Dick McMahon, who held the fort all evening, with 37 saves as compared to 17 for his opposite number. This has been just about par for the course this winter.
THIS GREEN SORTIE INTO YALE TERRITORY did not produce a score but it gave a packed Winter Carnival audience a chance to cheer. Such chances were not frequent enough as the Blue won, 7 to 1.
