The current version of the Dartmouth winter track team is expected to be generally weaker than the 1951-52 version. Graduation losses were heavy and removed such outstanding competitors as Pete McCreary in the hurdles, Nels Ehinger in the high jump, Al Reich and Sam Daniell. Among them these men held seven collegiate records and they will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace. A total of 16 lettermen led by Captain John Huck, a middle-distance runner, are returning, and these men together with some reservists and a few promising sophomores are expected to form the nucleus of the Dartmouth squad. In the sprints, seniors Dick Collins, Dick Calkins and Dick Goodman are all veterans, while John Huck, Dick Danforth and Ned Boody are the top middle -distance runners. The distance events will get some help from such Big Green cross-country dependables as Mike Morrissey, Walt Clarkson, Dick Hogarty, Ted Storrs and Dave Miller. Gary McKee, Dick Wilson and Chet Allen are the top hurdlers, but none is outstanding. In the field events there is, with few exceptions, a noticeable lack of talent. Hap Syle seems to be the only high jumper of merit at the moment, while Gary McKee and George Voss are the top pole vaulters, and Dick Calkins and Glen Walthen rate 1-2 in the broad jump. Big 230-pound George Rambour, a veteran, heads the shotput group, with Bob Jeffrey, a junior, seemingly the best man in the weights. Beyond these men the squad lacks depth, and with only two weeks practice as this went to press, it is difficult to predict how Coach Ellie Noyes' winter track team will eventually shape up and how much competition they will be able to offer in the various events.

THE FOOTBALL CAPTAINCY PASSES to Bayard Johnson '54 (right) of Grosse Pointe, Mich., from Peter Reich '53 of Pearl River, N. Y., who is shown congratulating him in the presence of Coach "Tuss" McLaughry. Johnson, center and line-backer, has been one of Dartmouth's top defensive players for the past two seasons.
