Here we are in December and close to Christmas. But your Secretary is sitting at his typewriter back in November minus a voice. Seems he made plans way back in the summer to go to the Yale game in New Haven. And, as the game approached, he was hoping for nothing more than a beautiful day in the open air since the record of the Dartmouth team to date was not encouraging to cheering or heavy bets. A few bucks were picked up around the office with six to fourteen points for Yale, and off we headed through the heavy traffic up the Merritt Parkway. Heavy traffic? Well, it was the kind of fall day that brings out the nature lovers although an unseemly lot of them turned off for the Bowl. We were delayed reaching the parking lot, drank three quick martinis off the hood of the car, chawed down several southern fried chicken legs, and began the long trek to the stands. Along the way our green ties and other obvious indications of affiliation were treated kindly and paternally by obvious Yale adherents. We discussed humbly the prospects of Dartmouth losing by not more than two touchdowns and reached our seats in time to find Dartmouth already ahead by six points. What happened? (to our neighbor). A beautiful long pass he said. Well, you know the story by now. All during the game we're waiting for Yale to open up and all that happens is that Dartmouth keeps passing to more touchdowns five in all. And the final score is 32 to o. All we can say is that on the following Monday, your old Uncle Reg wasn't the only one without a voice. And by the way, on the way back to the car we ran into those same Yale characters. Guess who was humble!
Incidentally, in between watching the team, we managed to see a few people we know. There must have been lots more because we could cover only a very small area. Nevertheless, Corinne and Bob Naramore and Val and Phil Hemphill were three rows in front of us. Haven't seen Phil in years and was impressed by the fact that he hasn't changed in size a bit, although he looks quite a bit grayer around the top. Harriet and BradYork and Holly and Ernie Draper were near by. Brad informed me that he has just changed jobs moving from space salesman with the Katz Agency (newspaper representatives) to space salesman with McCall's Magazine working in the drug classification as of October 26. Also saw Dick Rogers at a distance but couldn't catch his eye. Found out the following week that Frank Hermes was a witness to the slaughter when I ran into him at lunch. Frank was also a wee bit hoarse and we each had a scotch and soda to sooth the larynx. Formerly Media Director with Federal Advertising, he departed when the Agency became defunct to join D'Arcy in the same position. Has lived in New Canaan, Conn., for the past two years.
Highlight for your secretary during the past month was a business trip to the West Coast covering San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle. It was hurried but it was fun and we managed to take the good wife along for a vacation while we worked with the Procter & Gamble Sales department. Highlight was spending a weekend with Eleanor and DaveSmith in Berkeley. About a year ago Dave bought a new house on the side of a Berkeley hillside and has since found, with some very heavy rains, that the entire hillside is working its way into the valley below, taking his house with it. The house itself is English style brick with beautiful live oaks, tropical plants and gardens around it. But Dave is spending his time digging wells and pumping out water from the surrounding neighborhood in an effort to divert the underground streams. California may be a great place to live but I have been educated to certain disadvantages. It was also a pleasure to meet their four children: Nancy, 15, and all that goes with it; David, 13, fast becoming a millionaire with his 29-home paper route; Bobby, 8, who is supporting the gum business. Not as much as American Chicle would like, however, since he has developed a plan for saving and re-using his goodies by dropping the wad into the bottom of his milk glass at the start of a meal. When he has finished his lunch and consumed his milk, as every good boy should, there is the delicacy waiting to be resumed. This is fine for Bobby but very disconcerting to visitors who happen to get their milk glasses mixed up with Bobby's. Last is Denny, 6, who is practicing to become a carbon copy of Bobby. I still don't know where his gum disappeared to. All I know —it wasn't in my milk. The Smiths extend into the animal kingdom with Gal, a dog of friendly nature, and Mr. Von-Something-or-other, a parakeet, who spends his time climbing onto people's shoulders and being passed from hand to hand. He's, very neat, however, and apparently offers no housebreaking problems.
From the Hingham (Mass.) Journal comes word that Louville F. Niles (prominent school committee member) will be chairman of the United Red Feather Campaign for Hingham this fall. Lou has served with previous Red Feather campaigns in various capacities and is also a member of the Hingham School Planning and Construction Committee. He's a former member of the School Committee and the Regional School Planning Board. In the Real Estate business, Lou has offices in Brookline and is New England regional vice president of the Institute of Real Estate Management. It does our class proud to see the extent to which people like Lou Niles (and many others) actively participate in local political and civic affairs. Certainly it indicates that, through our education, we feel an obligation to the community over and beyond our own personal advancement. Congratulations, Lou, to you, and all others like you, who are contributing of yourselves to the happiness and security of America as a whole.
As of this year, the Fay School in Southboro, Mass., celebrates its 88th year. Among the new faculty appointments for the coming year are: Mr. David F. Pierce, who will teach English and take charge of the school publication, while Mrs. Pierce will assist in the office.
Among the lucky visitors to the Hanover Inn during this past fall were: The TomBledsoes from Port Washington, N. Y., the Jim Shoenfelts from West Leesport, Pa., andHank Mullers from Pittsburgh. Therewill be undoubtedly many more as the football season progresses and the attraction of Hanover in the fall becomes more enticing. We envy those who can make it.
