The first serious signs of winter have shown up in Hanover by now, we're sure, and maybe where you are they are just around the corner, if not already present. As this column is being written there's been no snow in our transient locale, but at least a nip in the air reminds us it's autumn. By the way, we've finally arrived at a good liberty port, Istanbul, replete with mosques and minarets, but first to the business at....

THE HITCHING POST

In Denver Frank Hotchkiss married Frances Beach Willis of Champaign, III. The date was July 31. Frances is an Illinois alumna. The couple is living in the Mile-High City where Frank is in business.

Dick Griffith spliced the nuptial knot with Nancy Rae Bourn of Gardner, Mass., September 4. Griff had been working in Gardner until his promotion to assistant merchandising manager with Sears Roebuck Cos. in Gloversville, N.Y.

By now it is Mr. and Mrs. for Don Miner and Shirley Gehrer of Wichita, Kans., who set September 26 for their marriage. Shirley attended Sacred Heart College and Don, who was with the Veterans' Administration in White River Junction, is now in Burlington, Vt.

Last one for this month just snuck into the line up with the receipt today of the announcement that Johnny Oakley and Ann Kirkland Young of Summit, N.J., were wed October 10.

WALKING THE LAST MILE

A pair of potential pairs were listed in the September papers. On the fifth of that month John "Chipper" Chapman was engaged to Miss Jean Reynolds Tabor of Wickford R. I. Jean is a grad of Rhode Island U.

A fall wedding is planned for Miss Shirley Deyo and Clift Whiteman The happy event was proclaimed on September 20. Shirley is a Pine Manor J. C. gal, and H. C. has been employed by the Guaranty Trust Cos. in N.Y.C.

RATTLE PRATTLE

A fine note from Al "Grubby" Dickson proudly states the arrival of Henry Charles Dickson on July 16. Young Chip "is full of beans and leads Joy a busy chase." The Grubber also said Ken and Nina Rothchild stopped by Grosse Pointe way en route to Minneapolis last summer when Ken got out of the Army. Other class news included the marriage of Tom McMahon to Mary Penni of Marblehead, Mass., October 4. Mary, a Green Mountain Junior College graduate, and Tom are setting up house in Grosse Pointe.

SERVICE SCENERY

This department seems to be dwindling, due no doubt to the fact that Navy contracts are running out for most of the Rot-C's and the rest of you have finished up tours with all branches. We hope that's the case for Jim Landrigan, who was last heard of mumbling something appropriate in regard to his status as Marine Corps captain on the Korean front at truce time.

Of the blue and golds still with time to do, we bumped into Ben Johnson at the C. E. Piers Club in Norfolk before we all shoved off for the Med. So far over here we haven't been in the same port together but in Palermo, Sicily, Waller's first call, Gene ulrich was waiting on the pier to greet us and expound on his theories of how to beat the Navy Supply Corps. After six months' tour over here, though, he admits they may not be the answer, as the USS Gyatt (DD-712) is still economically sound. And in our next liberty town, Cagliari, Sardinia, Bob McIlwain came over and twisted our arm to make us join him for a few brandies on the beach. Trust "Crash" found it easier getting underway next day as main propulsion assistant on the USS Greene (DDR-711) than we did. Oh, Ulcers mentioned that Ed Tuck gave up the ni-vee career last June and has associated himself with a dairy concern in South Bend, Ind. Trying to get tix for the Fighting Irish football games, Ed?

GRAPEVINE REPORTS

Miscellaneous, matters for Santa's month might be commenced with a quick look at the register to see who were Hanover Innmates in August and September. John andRosemary Talley signed the log from Oklahoma City" and are presumed to have been on a New England vacation. Also stopping by were "Red" Austin, Wes Field, and BillWeissman, plus the Tom Greens, who have now settled down in Hanover since Tom was awarded a teaching fellowship in the physics department at Dartmouth. Inkadentally the spouse is the former Mary Allison Beezra of Seattle.

Continuing with the saga of the Hotchkiss clan (see wedding bells notes above), GeneHotchkiss is another Fifty "in town" these days as Assistant to the Dean. Twin Jim and wife Nancy are living in La Grange, III., and Jim's working in the Economic Research Department of United Air Lines at Midway Airport, Chicago. Jack Tull and better half are ensconced in the same neighborhood as the Hotchkisses, and to round out the Indian village, Bill Pendill '48 was scheduled to set up house with his new wife in that neck of the woods.

Richard J. Wilcox is becoming a big name in the insurance field, having joined that fraternity's most elite sales organization, the Million Dollar Round Table, with his second straight year in the seven-figure column, this time chalked up by September with Prudential's New York office.

On June 27 Ray Peppard and Dick Tobin joined the staff of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital to swell the ranks of the class representatives on The Plain. Inkadentally, Dick Ziesing's current operations are revealed by the letterhead he used in his latest note, The Colonial Paper Cos., Conshohocken Pa. And Bob Misey lucked out combining business and pleasure with a trip to England for the Coronation and some sightseeing, the latter still going on in Liverpool whence came his card in September.

Lotsa troops mustered in at the Inn last season, so starting with the June roster, visitors included Gene Hotchkiss and the JoelLeavitts. During July the Dick C. Johnsons took lodgings at the corner and so did DickDale and Dick Healy. What would have happened if they'd played "Open the Door, You-Know-Who!"? In August only guests were Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bray.

To close, we have an informative epistle from Charlie Davison that begins with the news that on June 27, in Delavan Wis., JimStevens wed Katharine Stevens, Vassar '52. The couple is at home in Stuyvesant Town, New York City. Also from the Gotham area, Jack Van Zoeren is to be hitched to an United Airlines hostess from Boulder, Colo., sometime this month, and Alex Hoffman is making like a poppa and an advertising executive, watching baby and Ivory Soap grow, in that order. Curt Dunnavan dwells in the Village and Bob Ferguson has also been seen thereabouts. Chollie reports that Jack Wetenhall is bidding the Marines a fond adieu and heading back towards Manhattan, while Bill Turino, it is claimed, is up in Maine "picking potatoes and hunting bears, or maybe rabbits." Thanks a lot for all the info, Chas, and be sure to tell all those guys you want to see 'em next June in Hanover for the big reunion. You should be hearing some more definite dope about it soon.

Since you'll have celebrated the arrival of the New Year by the time we have at you again, here's wishes for happy holidays. May the coming leap year season help you unhooked bachelors as wants to get caught get caught, and those of you not of such mind to stay ahead of the thundering herd of Sadie Hawkinses.
