In the spirit of the New Year, we're dispensing with our pithy, but kind of stupid, little headlines and have vowed to no longer write about doctors, lawyers, marriages, or births... Only fresh new stories with interesting new perspectives will grace these pages from now on.

What better way to start than with a correction. Tsan Merritt-Poree wrote to let us know that she doesn't teach kosher cooking at UCLA, rather she is the director of the whole culinary arts department in the Extension program there. "The kosher stuff is relatively passe," Tsan writes. "I mean, I still have a kosher kitchen... but that's the extent to which I'm involved in kosher right now." Sorry about the mistake, Tsan.

Tsan also wrote that Laura Swortwood married Bill Asher '84 last October in Lajolla. (We'll bend the rules a bit here, but only because it's related to Tsan's letter.)

Rob Patterson recently got two master's degrees from Johns Hopkins, one in international economics and one in international health care (like a doctor, but not really). Rob is also putting together a show of his photography. International photography, no doubt.

Matt Dickerson's first novel The FhmsburgEncounter is being published and should be on bookstore shelves in January. Matt is currently teaching computer science at Middlebury. Oh yeah, and he mentioned something about the birth of his son, Thomas Daniel, (eight pounds, 12 ounces, last August 13th), but really the thrust of his letter was the stuff about his new novel.

Well ... I guess since we did one birth announcement, it wouldn't hurt to do just one more... and maybe throw in another wedding for good measure... but absolutely no doctors or lawyers.

Sue Spencer Reckford and her husband Sam '83 had a daughter, Samantha Stevens, on October 28. Sue denies that constant television watching during her pregnancy, of "Bewitched" re-runs in particular, had any influence on the naming of her child.

Lisa Sweeny, who just received her Ph.D. in Russian literature (we don't know from where), has gotten engaged (we don't know when) to Tom Harrington. Lisa, if you're already married by now, our apologies.

I ran into Hubes Smith a couple of weeks ago. Actually, I didn't "run" into him. We were in our cars, waiting to exit the Century City Mall. (I love those L.A. encounters, babe.) Before Hubes drove off I managed to glean that he is currendy in Loyola Law School.

Oops, a lawyer reference . . . Oh, the hell with it.

John Solander is doing a residency for plastic surgery in Texas. Tommy Kong is doing his residency in Cardiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Jonathan Rubin is doing his residency in Philadelphia after recendy graduating from Dartmouth Med. Bill Boesch is in NYU Law School.

And finally . . . When next in New Haven appealing that felony conviction, be sure to look up Laura Ingraham, who is taking a break from the University of Virginia Law School to clerk for the Honorable Ralph Winter in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

So, that's our first column for the New Year. "What will those nutty '85 notes hold in the coming months?" you ask in breathless anticipation. Just a wealth of things new games, new prizes, new... well, trust us, a lot of things. We just haven't figured them out yet. In the meantime, keep those cards and letters coming!
