I called on John P. Canty a short time ago and found him at the Melrose Hospital recovering from a severe intestinal operation. His daughter went with me to his room and we had a short visit. I telephoned him today, January 14, and was glad to learn that he was home and making a good recovery. John was in the employ of the Boston and Maine railroad for years and for some time was Supervisor of Bridges and Buildings of the Fitchburg Division. He has the somewhat unique record of being in active service until the age of 84.

One memory that I have of him was in our freshman year. One winter night we were advised that one of our number had been kidnapped by the sophomores. Prof. Gerould and I were roommates that year and we bundled up and went forth, intent on revenge. As we were walking down the road to West Lebanon, we met Canty with a base ball bat on his shoulder. We joined him and continued the search for the kidnappers, but were unable to find any of the wicked sophomores who were wise enough to remain out of sight. I think there would have been some sore heads, if we had been successful.

I recently received two very interesting letters: one from Humphreys, the other from Dr. William P. Boynton. Humphreys has some 18,000 acres of timberland to supervise and is also a consultant with his son, Dartmouth '21, in their engineering business. His grandson has registered for Dartmouth '56. For recreation Humphreys takes his grandson to Canada and plays golf. He also looks after the interests of the class as Class Agent.

Dr. Boynton has retired and is living at Whittier, Calif. He lost his wife after a companionship of 49 years and has recently married again. He keeps up his interest in music and enjoys the fine bands and orchestras in his locality. He has as always a keen interest in Dartmouth and the welfare of the remaining members of '90.
