Undoubtedly you will all note the Stockwell family picture which, according to Howard, is too per cent complete. Am sure we all must congratulate our Class Agent for not only his highly successful money-raising activities for '17, but also on the wonderful family that he and Dot have raised to be good American citizens. As a matter of fact, Howard met Dot at Dartmouth summer school back in '17, and that is when the "trouble" started. It is also interesting to note that three Stock well boys also attended the old school.
Word from Gil and Marie Swett sunning themselves in early January on the white sands of Delray Beach, Fla.
"The team of Sweet and Swett which created so vast a confusion of identities amongst our classmates during freshman year (and some of you guys never did get it straight), was briefly reunited down here after a well-nigh complete separation of a quarter century. We looked Carl and his good wife up at their nice home in Fort Lauderdale and a feast of reminiscence occurred. The years have been very kind to Carl; in fact, Marie (whose judgment of such matters is to be respected) opines that he's the best looking "17er she's yet seen. Carl is retired, and a permanent Floridian, though he gave me a solemn promise to come back to Hanover next June."
According to the Springfield Union the Chauncey Steigers had a large family dinner at Christmas time, so we have reason to feel they are in sufficient good health to attend reunion this June.
Switching from Springfield, Mass., to Los Angeles, Calif., the following appeared in the Daily Trojan, the U.S.C. student paper, dated January 5: "Philosophers Name Searles Vice Prexy. Dr. Herbert L. Searles, SC professor of philosophy, was elected vice-president of the Pacific division of the American Philosophical Association Wednesday. The association held its meeting in Mudd Memorial Hall.
"Teachers of philosophy in Western colleges and universities attended the session." Congratulations, Herb!
The following letter from Sumner Emerson we believe is very interesting and gives a rather different slant as to the bit Dartmouth might play in our life: "Why don't you and Elsie spend a vacation here instead of California or the wilds of Canada? It's both restful and interesting. Charlotte and I are spending five days and attending everything Alumni Council Meetings, chapel, Great Issues lectures, discussions, movies of Greenland, hockev games etc. etc. Today I called Don Aldrich - incapacitated in Dick's House for three weeks with virus pneumonia, but definitely a convalescent, and going back home to Princeton soon. Francis is here at the Inn and his daughter and son-in-law were here yesterday. Arch Gile was away when I called at his office, but saw the squire of New London. Sam Mac Killop, for a few minutes. He looks fine and is planning on next June.
"Here we are facing a reunion, but no Princeton game or Harvard game dinners, nothing to pep the bunch up. Sam and I appointed ourselves a committee to suggest you arrange something or other as time is getting short.
"The Council Meetings were very interesting., to, us old has-beens and John Dickey gave a very strong talk on the colleges and pinkoism on the part of a few members of their faculties, which we have just been through at Rutgers. Bill McCarter thinks the return to one platoon will help Dartmouth. Says the swimming coach wants breast- strokers who also know how to swim."
Sam White reports the good news that he has made his plans to be with us at the next reunion. Sam is still with the Pan American Air. He and Lou made a trip East last fall and took in the Harvard, Yale and Columbia games, but reports that he saw but few '17ers, much to his disappointment.
A report from The Bulletin gives the following information which might be interesting:
"The proportion coming from public schools is also a new record. Advancing from an approximately equal average representation before World War II, the public school representation moved up, post-war, to 60%, where it leveled off for two years prior to making this further advance."
Guess we can all remember back in '13 when the proportion of prep school boys was just about what the high school boys are today. It is just another indication that the old school is at least retaining its degree of democracy. It is just one thing we might all bear in mind when giving to the Alumni Fund.
MAKE YOUR PLANS TO ATTEND REUNION. REMEMBER THE DATES JUNE 19, 20, 21.
A REAL FAMILY PICTURE: Howard Stockwell, Class Agent for '17, says this fine picture of his wife, four sons and two daughters, with their husbands, wives and children, is 100% complete. Three of the Stockwell boys went to Dartmouth.
